Any One Elses Child Not Tolerate Sugar Well?
Not that we feed Olivia alot of junk food but now that she is 2 1/2 she is constantly munching off peoples plates, she's a grazer. Whenever she has really sugary foods she gets sick and throws up. This has happened a few times when we are camping or eating at others houses. When I casually brought it up to some friends of ours who run a Mexican Restaurant in town they said its pretty common and could be from her genes or the fact that she wasn't exposed to sweet type foods. So anyone know if this is fact or myth? And any good tips for how to handle it when we are somewhere and all the other kids are eating candy?

even at 2 1/2 it shouldn't take your DD long to make the association between sugar and vomiting. if you remind her that when she eats things that are very sugary that her body doesn't like it and she will throw up, my guess is that it should only take a few times.
read some stuff about dealing with kids with allergies...the approach will be similar. and re: truth or myth, it is truth for your DD so it doesn't really matter. and in the end refined sugar isn't good for any child so she'll have a step up on her health!!

My DD doesn't tolerate sugar real well either but doesn't get sick ... just hyper! Now that we seem to be on the b-day circuit w/ a party 2-3 x a month it makes it REAL hard to limit her sugar! Esp since the goody bags from the party or normally filled w/ lollipops, mini candy bars, sweet tarts etc! right on the heels of the b-day cake and icecream @ the party.
At 3.5 she does realize that it has an effect and knows I prefer liimits. So she normally brings the candy home and we put it in a jar on her shelf in the pantry. It is "hers" and she can "have it" so she ask and tries to limit it to 1 / day! I do think w/ a little more "age" your DD will understand the effect on her as well and elect to limit herself. But it wouldn't hurt to do a little medical research to see if there is a link to allergy etc. My DD is G6PD which is an enzyme deficiency and has to limit lots of medications, vitamins and a few foods. |
