Woo-hoo ...
I found out a few days ago that our local school where DS will go to Kindergarten etc. has chosen Spanish as their world language. We voted on a tax override so the languages could come back to the elementary schools (missing since 2004!). Schools - really the principal - had to decide on Spanish or Mandarin and I really thought because of enrollment ours would get Mandarin but only one of the 8 elementary schools ended up with Mandarin. While I would have been okay with Mandarin (I mean it is so difficult to learn that any third language would be a breeze) I am so excited that DS will be speaking Spanish and taught by a professional vs his mom! Good but not like a teacher! Anyone else's elementary school teaching Spanish to our darlings from Guat? |

Yes, many of our schools teach Spanish. It is a dual language immersion program and you choose to enroll your child vs the regular English only track. Gabriella starts kinder this year and we have enrolled her in the dual language program. She is very excited about starting kinder and learning Spanish.

We moved half way across the country last year, and intentionally chose a school district that has several elementary schools with dual language (English-Spanish) immersion programs. Then to our added delight, we discovered a dual language immersion preschool a few blocks from our house! DS is just over 2, and I speak only Spanish to him.....I'm looking forward to September, when he will start to hang out with other children who speak Spanish! (Playdates are sort of weird, since all of my friends here are English-only speakers, and so are their kids.)
Congrats on having the Spanish option in your local school! |
