Need a good reply!
This situation has happened twice with the same lady -
We are walking out of church with our 2 1/2 year old (from Guat) and our 15 and 17 year old when this a tactless mother of 3 teenagers yells "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING, oh my gosh, COULDN'T YOU HAVE GOTTEN A DOG INSTEAD?" She goes on and on about starting over again and how she would never want another child and ends with "Can't imagine what your were thinking". I am appalled and speechless!! I just tell her that we are very happy and would love another one. But I would love to have a smart comeback as I think it is extremely rude!! My DH doesn't seem to think much of it but Carlos is a very smart little guy and I would hate it if he understood what she was saying. Any ideas?? Thanks, Janie

I'd say something like, "Do you know you're insulting our Pastor when you speak this way? I'm sure he did not preach about being rude, thoughtless and un-God like inside the building you just came out of."
Just a quick thought.

Janie, I would have to smile and say I'm glad to see that's what your husband choose when he picked you! Is he happy about his choice?
I can't stand it when people are just so RUDE and seomtimes they need it right back!!

I would probably say,'Just because you had a bad experience raising your children, doesn't mean we all share that experience.' And then just walk away.

Truth in Love
While this is probably the more difficult thing to do, and believe me I would struggle with coming back with a smart comment, I was thinking truth in love.
Maybe a comeback from scripture would be the most appropriate given you are coming from church. Maybe saying something simple like, "children are a gift from God" Psalm 127:3 or " true and undefiled religion in the sight of God is to care for the orphan"James 1:27 Or if that seems to "preachy" maybe just a simple, "I am so glad our heavenly Father doesn't feel that way about His children" Just a few ideas. Praying for you to deal with this situation with love and patience. I would struggle with this one so much and I have to remind myself constantly that everyone doesn't have a heart for adoption or for children, therefore they are really unable to truly understand "the why" in our choices. I wouldn't be able to help myself, being the natural smarty pants that I am. I would have to stop her at the "I can't imagine what you were thinking, coundn't you just have gotten a dog instead?" And, I would say something like, "I bet your husband has that exact same thought every morning when he gets out of bed." And smile politely and walk away.
Sorry you are having to deal with such a rude and hateful woman at your church of all places!! Blessings

Thanks everyone for your awesome replies, I had lots of laughs!!!!
My favorites are the ones asking her husband what he was thinking!! I've got a whole week to decide.... I think I'll go with Gatos or maybe EZ2luv. Gosh I can't imagine what she will say when we bring our baby daughter home (hopefully soon). I may be asking advice again. Thanks again for making me feel better today, Janie
