We are having a Celebration of Life Birthday party for Carmen for her 2nd birthday in July. My MOPS group is hosting it and we are inviting several hundred people. I am so happy about this as the doctors think this might be Carmen's last birthday. We want this to be the most special birthday ever.

A generous and VERY talented friend has offered to make a cake. She makes beautiful cakes and I am just speechless that she offered to do this.

She has asked what we might like as far as decoration and I am just not sure. The party invitation has orange, red, yellow, dark pink, light pink flowers. Those are special colors because Carmen is Mayan and bright colors look so beautiful on her. Also, we have chosen the casket spray and we went with those same colors.

Any ideas? I could request flowers in those colors are something Guatemalan???? My friend can do ANYTHING.

What a wonderful celebration of Carmen you are going to have! For some reason, what immediately came to my mind is a cake with a Quetzal on it - Guatemala's national bird has such rich coloring and is always said to be one fo the most beautiful in the Americas (something it has in common with Carmen).

What a special friend for a special daughter! There are many Guatemalan textiles that use those colors. If you goole "Guatemalan textiles" there are quite a few sites that have examples. Maybe they would give you some ideas.

What a wonderful idea for a beautiful girl. I am always a fan of tiered cakes with live flowers for decoration but I am sure anything your friend makes will be perfect for the day. Can't wait to see pictures.

What a beautiful idea for Carmen, and a great way to celebrate her 2nd birthday.. I love the idea's about all of the colors on her cake. What if you did all the different colors and scan a picture of her to put in the middle.. I have seen lots of cakes that have pictures on them. Then you could trim the edges and sides with all of the colors.. I pray it is a day of great celebration for a beautiful little girl. Happy Birthday Carmen!!!!!

Maybe she can do worry doll around the cake (around the outside of the middle)? Also the native flowers of Guatemala are the orchids. They come is beautiful colors. Take lots of pictures of Carmen on her special day! Sending hugs!

A butterfly came immediately to my mind. Such beautiful fragile creatures....They also go through such a miraculous metamorphis from one life form to the next....I really hope Carmen's celebration of life is a day that will bring you wonderful, special memories for years to come. What a beautiful celebration. I like the idea of the worry dolls also. The legend is that if you place your worry dolls under your pillow at night that your worries will be taken away.

I don't have any ideas because everyone's else's ideas are so great! But I did want to tell you how amazed I am at how you and your husband and older daughter are handling Carmen's illness.
God's glory just radiates from you all through your website journal. I know that He is smiling down on you and know that He made absolutely NO mistake when He chose Carmen to be your daughter.
Please know that I am praying for your family and have learned a lot by following your journey... about courage, faith, and especially about God's love.

I also second the idea of butterflies - they are amazingly magical, don't stay with us for long but leave a big impact with their presence and beauty. Whatever you choose it will be special, just like your whole family
