I got a Netflix subscription - need movie recommendations

My co worker got me a 2 month Netflix subscription for my B-day. I am so excited about it, but I'm not really a movie watcher. My kids love to watch TV, of course.

I am looking for some movie recommendations - including family and kids movies, too. Any independent films or good documentaries?

I went to Netflix to make my list and all I have is The Bucket List, Toy Story 2 (can never find that at Blockbuster and Katy wants it), Diego, and a Niick, Jr cartoon movie. I need some help, can't you tell?

We love to get tv series that we haven't watched already, like anything on cable. We watched SATC, Weeds, and a few other shows that way since we don't have any kind of cable/satellite. We also watched Friday Night Lights that way which we could get with our rabbit ears but we tended to miss episodes so we waited and caught up once it was all out of DVD.

Hm.. other good movies. One way to start is to just put in some actors you like and either rate or add movies as you go, then see what it comes up with for a recommendation. Or search for academy award winners or something like that. We did that and went back to get award winners from years and years ago, which has been fun.

A few we saw recently or not so recently that I thought were great:

Akeelah and the Bee
Iron Jawed Angels (HBO movie about women's suffrage)
Enchanted
Finding Neverland
Calendar Girls
Thoroughly Modern Millie (Julie Andrews Musical--we still quote this 4 years later!)

Some potentially interesting ones on our queue that are coming (just two since even though we have 174 movies on our queue most are pretty popular old titles):

Maria Full of Grace
Children of Heaven

Have fun!!! I love our netflix subscription!

Thanks,
I didn't think of TV shows, but that's a good idea. We never can finish a movie anyway (or start one for that matter, lol). We don't have cable either, so that's good. Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going over to Netflix now......

I LOVE that movie! And no one seems to have ever heard of it but me and my college roommate! I am glad she and I aren't the only two fans in the world!

LOL! We found it on a fluke and watched the whole thing in absolute stitches! We still shout out "Raspberries!" fairly often or comment that one of us is "fresh as paint" or "full of applesauce". That movie is a riot!

BELLA! You have to see it. It won a ton of independent film awards and is a GREAT movie about adoption.

The John Hughes film "Men With Guns". It's not about Guatemala per se. But it gives a good, fictional dipiction of what went on during the Civil Wars that went on throughout Latin America in the 80s, including Guatemala.

It's a drama, not a war flick. It was pretty well done.

I've been a Netflix member ever since they first started out, and I have to say that I just love the service!

You might want to take a look at the Top 100 list under the Browse menu. It shows the most popular movies that have been rented during the past year. I often go to that screen to make sure I've rented the latest movies.

Another thing that I do is check my DirecTV channel lineup to find out which movies they're showing on pay-per-view. The PPV movies are all available at Netflix.

Another neat browse function is being able to find out which movies won Academy Awards or nominations (they also have Golden Globe awards).
