If your child is having problems in school, especially when it relates to reading (and that can be in any subject), I highly recommend that you have a developmental vision screening performed! At the end of 3rd grade my daughter finished reading at a 1st grade level. Her doctor recommended a developmental vision exam. I was amazed at the exam she was given as I had never experienced one like it before. We walked away with a diagnosis of convergence excess and ocular motor dysfunction, but perfect acuity. She was placed in bifocals to help relax her muscles and told she would most likely require vision therapy (expensive and not covered by insurance). The doctor told us we should see improvements in her school work. A few months later she went for a recheck and her reading level had improved so we were told we could hold off on vision therapy. She went back yesterday, after just finishing 4th grade. They repeated her visagraph and her reading grade equivalent was 8.3! Her convergence excess is completely corrected. She now can come out of her bifocals. I just sat there with my mouth open. She is still a puzzle and there are other issues, but this definitely helped us get to the bottom of one of the issues!
