Question Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome (anyone else had their child diagnosed with this?)

hi

Carmen has just recently been diagnosed with Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome. It's a geneticall inherited condition that means she can't absorb vitaminb12 and will get injections of this for the rest of her life. I am just extremely relieved that it is so treatable and she is now running around again like her old self. It has been a worrying time and now I am counting my blessings.

Apparently it is a very rare condition - but I just wanted to ask if anyone else had gotten this diagnosis for their child? I am wondering if it is more prevalent in Guatemala? and just trying to educate myself in general

many thanks in advance for any responses!

No ideas but loads of HUGS I was wondering where you were. I hadn't seen you on the boards for some time. An injection a month isn't too bad in the grand scheme of things if Carmen is healthy otherwise. Loads of HUGS again. Bernie

I've never heard of this and looked it up. Seems quite rare so I 'm so glad your Drs were able to diagnose it. What kind of symptoms did Carmen have? Was it an easy diagnosis or did she have to go through lots of testing - poor baby. Curious to see if it's genetically prevalent in Guatemalans.

So nice to see you post MK, besides little miss Carmen's diagnosis, I hope all else is going well for you both.

she didn't really have any symptoms yet - it was a routine bloodwork up after a viral infection - the doc noticed her hemaglobin (?) was low and a few other things & organised a referral to a hospital consultant

they then called me a week or two later and said she needed to come in to hospital - to get a bone marrow test - they were worried it was leukemia - that was a long long few days but such a relief to get the IGS diagnosis

Carmen is a delight!!! i have forgotten how to upload pictures and would so love to - must see if i can figure it out again

thanks for the hugs bernie - thinkin of you in pgn limbo/hell, everyday

I'm glad for your manageable diagnosis. I love the pictures, and they remind me quite a bit of my own dd.

I have been off for what seems like forever. Glad they have put a Dx on it, blessings to you all. I have a 5yo from Guat. who has been diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with stage one cirosis of the liver. I know the stress these diseases can take on us. Good luck. Nancy

hi!

Hi Mary-Kate-

I think about you and Carmen often. She is just BEAUTIFUL!! I can't even imagine how scary that uncertain waiting time must have been for you and even though this is not the best news, at least she will be okay (easy for me to say, huh?). I am sorry you are going through this. Stay in touch...! We miss you around here. I still lurk all the time but do not post much.

Warm regards,
Maureen
