Plane Ticket for Older Child

I have a question for anyone who has brought home a child that required a plane ticket, not a lap ticket.

When and how did you purchase the ticket for your older child? Also, were there any problems with the plane being full and not being able to get a seat?

We aren't out of PGN yet but I haven't really thought about this until today and it made me a little nervous about getting his ticket.

Thanks

I have not experienced this, but if it is not a lap ticket then I would think that it would be a one way full fare ticket. I would book that ticket when booking my own so that I would not run into the possibility that there wouldn't be a seat available. Besides, there might be a chance that it will be a little cheaper booking it in advance rather than waiting until the last minute. I don't know what timing is like right now from epink to appointment date, but anything greater than 7 days notice should help your ticket price a little bit.

Don't have experience either, but I agree that I would try to book it when you book yours to be on the safe side. You will need to make sure you get a copy of the BC or passport to make 100 percent sure how his name appears on it so the ticket matches his passport.

Good luck!

We have done this twice.... and yes... we booked their tickets when we booked ours.
For us, our one way ticket was the same price as our roundtrip tickets.... so.... dont be shocked by the price.

Wow

The same price!!!! I am glad you warned me, I probably would have had a heart attack.

Also, I think booking it at the same time will be safer and make me feel much better.

Thanks Everyone.

I just came home with an active 14 month old....and I chose to buy her an actual seat for her trip home (not lap ticket). I did so by calling Continental directly and talking to int'l desk. I chose to do so at the time that I was buying the tickets for myself and the friend who went down with me, but you could also wait and buy them after you arrived in guatemala

All I needed to have was the exact name shown on her passport (they got spelling a little wrong & that didn't matter). My cost was about $400 for her 1-way fare from Guatemala to DC. That was about 2/3 of the cost of my round-trip ticket.

Although our son was only 8 months when we brought him home, we had a seat for him so that he could be strapped in a car seat (it's safer and it also was more comfortable for all of us).

We bought his ticket at the same time as we bought ours. We made sure that the name on his ticket was the same as on his amended birth certificate (and, hence, it was the same as on his passport and visa). We verified the way his name appeared with our agency (we did not receive a copy of his amended birth certificate prior to traveling and because my husband and I have different last names we wanted to make sure which order they appeared).

You can buy a ticket there, but then you run the risk of having to change your tickets if there isn't a seat available. Our flight home was full.

My daughter was 6 months old when she came home, but I did purchase a seat for her - I wanted her to have the safety of a carseat on the plane, and we had an 18+-hour travel day, so I felt it was important to have the room. As others have said, I just purchased her ticket when we got our Embassy appointment - same time that I purchased mine.

We brought home our DD in December. She was 5 yrs. old. Basically we waited till we had pink and booked the flights round trip for us and a one way for her. It was just as much as our roundtrip ticket. About $700 or so I think!! UGH!!

Good luck! Can't wait to see your OUT!!!

We bought ours, two children, through our travel agent when we bought our tickets for the pick up trip. I now understand that might not be a good idea incase there is a discrepancy in how the child's name is on the Guatemalan BC versus the ticket. Anna

We booked a round trip ticket for our son for the ride home and just never used the second half. (His ticket started in Guatemala - and then I just picked a random day for the return.) It was cheaper than a one-way ticket. Just be careful who you admit it to- one person at Delta helped me and suggested doing it that way, another person later said "don't tell me that or I can't sell you the ticket". Check both internet prices and call the airline directly to find the cheapest flights and then once the tickets are purchased, you make sure the airline connects the reservations so they know you're all traveling together.
