Life can change in an instant
Today I had my yearly check-up with the doctor when the fragility (is this even a word) of life smacked me right in the face. He found a lump in my left breast. Now once I heard these words everything following was as if I was hearing it through a tunnel. He did say that more than likely it is a benign fibroid tumor, but he wants a mammogram just to make sure.
Is anyone familiar with fibroid tumors, are they common and do they have to be removed? I would goggle it, but I am a little bit apprehensive about the information I may find. At this point, I am not even thinking about the alternative, just keeping myself focused, staying positive and praying. Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Praying for you
I have several.. Some come and go and some just stay.. I believe you can have them removed but my thinking is if they are taking up space then nothing else can grow there..LOL Just a little humor.. I know its scary and I will be praying this is all it is...

Yes, have heard of them, but know nothing about them. YOur going to be GREAT, but I can understand your concern and shock. Praying for you and looking forward to seeing your "non-threatning" and good news report. And wise decision not to get on the Internet. Trust your Doctors instints and do what your told to do. Benign fibroid tumors are quite common - I had one a few years ago and had it removed. My understanding is that it's always good to remove even benign tumors so that they don't become something else eventually, but I am SO not a health care expert so don't trust a word I say.
I know how stressful this is - I'm looking forward to your coming back and reporting that everything is OK.

I had one twenty years ago. It's an uncomfortable procedure but not terrible. Hoping to hear the good news that your Dr. is completely right!

I found a lump in my breast about 5 years ago and had a mammo. They said it was 95% a fibroadenoma, no problem. I'm not a 95% kind of girl so I had them take it out. It was a fibroadenoma.
I'll be thinking of you and will hold the space that it is just a little lump and a reminder that indeed, we shouldn't take life for granted! Please keep us posted.

I just went through this, again, two weeks ago. I get mammorgrams now even though I am 28 because of my mom so they found a lump, called right away and I had to go in and have another mammo done of it and an ultraosund, all with Alec and Mikayla in tow because I have no family or anyone to watch my kids around here. FUN let me tell you. It's just another fibrocystic lump....I have three of them. They are very common and two of mine cause me pain with my monthly cycle. I am sure it will be just fine. I will say a prayer for you and let us know what happens. It can be scary! I know all about it...:-(

I know the minute we hwar words like lump it is easy to become terrified. I have learned though it is always better to be on the side of caution and have the mammogram done. If the doctor says it seems like a fibroid than it most likely is. My advice is to be concerned but try not to worry yourself sick. You are in my prayers. I have had many scares that thank God turned out to be nothing. Stress producing none the less.

Wow!!! Thank you for all the responses, words of encouragement and prayers. The doctor's office should be calling tomorrow with the date for my mammogram and once complete I will definitely post the results. I know that all will be O.K.
