We have been waiting 22 days for a birth certificate from Guatemala City!!

Today, the nun at the orphanage told us (through translation) that it had to go through RENAP!

WHAT IS RENAP????? HOW DO THEY OPERATE? WHAT ARE THE STEPS?

Anyone have information regarding RENAP?

I don't know much about it, but what I have been told is that RENAP is associated with the CNA, instead of the BC coming from the civil registary that the child was born they all now come from one place and that is RENAP. We were just submitted for GC BC on Tuesday, so please post when you get yours, so I have an idea of how long I have to wait. It really blows my mind that they are putting us through all the new laws when we in fact grandfathered in. I don't understand why they don't just do it the old way. I was told it takes a month or a little longer get a BC now, and GC used to be 2 weeks. I hope they get moving. Good luck!!

RENAP has nothing to do with the CNA. It is a standarized system for birth certificates throughout the country that has also been implemented in other countries in Latin America (you can google it). Its implementation in Guatemala unfortunately happened to coincide with the adoption stuff but the two are not related.

RENAP is being implemented in different cities in Guatemala at different times.

My BC was from Jutiapa and at first my attorney said he just had to go talk to the mayor of the town to get an amended one. But when he tried that he found out he had to go through RENAP (I think it was his first...he doesn't do that many adoptions). I was told RENAP would cause an additional month delay but I actually got it quicker.

The lawyer said one of the step was that he had to write a report on the "parties" --- still not sure who the parties are. Then on one day I was told the attorney had gotten RENAP approval and then on the next day I had a BC.

I still haven't seen mine...but some people have seen them & there is some sort of RENAP heading on it.

Basically it just means a longer wait for BC and a little more work for your attorney to do....Good luck.
