UPDATE: RE: stinky urine and breath

Went to the Dr. this morning.
I know this sounds dumb, but I let her have a sucker while we were waiting so she has that in her mouth while I am trying to tell him how stinky her breath is?!?!? DUH!!
She couldn't potty on demand so no urine test.
He tells me she is fine.
We leave.
I run around town for over an hour and this is all not sitting right with me and Kate's diaper is still dry so I think she could probably potty now.
We go back...she tinkles....we leave....he calls my cell not 5 minutes later and tells me there is bacteria in her urine.
Amox. 2x daily for 7 days.
I am to bring her back Friday for urine re-check.
This is where I messed up:
I didn't ask him any questions!! (I was just so glad that he found something.)
Now I don't know if she has UTI, Kidney or Bladder infection.
I have been back on the internet and have convinced myself that she is going to have kidney damage or that she has some sort of kidney disease or failure going on.
I have got to stay off of the internet.
The bad breath thing is what is bothering me.... How bad does the kidney thing have to be for the breath to smell that bad.
Urine I can see (it is rank) but breath?
AND OF COURSE GUILT THAT I DIDN'T TAKE HER A DAY OR TWO AGO!!!!!!!!
GOOD NEWS is that she is peacefully sleeping with her new purple crocs on, and she cheered for herself when she tinkled on Doc's potty. It was really cute....me doing the happy potty dance for her probably not so cute!

I did a webmd search because I've been following this thread.

According to their symptom checker, if Kate has a fruity or a "bitter almond odor" on her breath, you should seek emergency medical treatment...they list the following possible conditions:

Diabetic Ketoacidosis
Cyanide Poisoning
Acute Sinusitis
Type I Diabetes
Dry Mouth
Eating certain foods

Sinusitis can be caused by bacteria - so maybe call the doc and ask him if this is a possibility?

The stinky urine is associated with a UTI or kidney infection. I suffered from chronic UTI's throughout my teenage years [sorry if this is a TMI moment] and it's so painful and awful...but if Kate isn't having trouble peeing or if she's not complaining that it hurts to go to the bathroom then I'm not sure if the UTI applies.

Another possible condition - Candidiasis. It's basically like a yeast infection and can affect the mouth and "diaper area."

Hope that helps. It at least gives you something to ask the doc about!

Yes, reading too much can scare you or drive you crazy

Can you call the doctor tomorrow to ask -- even if you have to leave a message with the answering service and have him call you back? I would tend to think that with that kind of antibiotic (broad-spectrum, not too strong), it's probably a UTI or bladder infection, and I'm sure if it were something more serious the doctor would have said something to that effect.

Don't feel guilty! She will be fine (((hugs)))

Let me preface with this is probably nothing too serious.

But as a mom you are probably freaked out as I would be.

Bacteria in the urine is most likely a UTI. I honestly have no idea why she would generally smell "weird" but a UTI is OK and will go away w/ treatment *most of the time*.

I know of someone who had so many UTIs and kidney infections that they had surgery, but they never had a kidney problem long term.

Your physician can run a kidney function test to better understand renal function- this should tell you what is up. I bet 99% that it is fine.

Hopefully it's a UTI that clears up soon.

((hugs)) to you. I understand that this is no trivial matter and I pray that your darling is just fine...

There are a lot of other things too... if you do not feel satisfied or are still anxious, you should move forward with referrals to a urologist.

PS. I always have a trace amount of bacteria in my urine... that is normal for me... I don't treat it... it could be that your daughter is OK with this.

How is your physician treating this? or Is he?

If your daughter did not have fever or pain, it is most likely just a simple uti. But, I would call your doctor today and ask all your questions. Write them all down and go through the list one by one. Don't let the doctor intimidate you into not asking them all! It's your baby, you have a right to ask questions.
I know the feeling of not being able to ask questions right away and then kicking yourself for it.

My son (now 8) is a mouth breather at night and since he was very small, his breath would always be pretty nasty in the AM. And when he would have a sinus infection, it would be even worse.
Maybe the stinky breath isn't related to the urine smell?
Michele

I was thinking of this post at about 4:30 this morning. DS had a nightmare, and I went in to comfort him, and his breath nearly knocked me over! He isn't sick at all, just had some really stinky breath. So maybe Michele is right, maybe your DD's bad breath is totally unrelated to her urinary infection.

My daughter second daughter would get horrible breath when she was teething (especially when she would cut molars). It almost smelled like the old tissue was rotting as the tooth cut through (sorry if that's too gross a description). She would also get loose stool due to swallowing lots of saliva.

I was really concerned at first, but once we realized what it was we thought it was kind of cute. Her uncle even gave her the short lived nickname "little baby bad breath."

Good luck to you!

I second whoever said bad breath with sinus almost knocked them over. My son, right now has a cold and has chronic sinus drainage. He has dragon breath a lot of the time...

I hope that it is and you can relax.

My daughter came home with a UTI. If your child is under two and has a UTI, don't be surprised, after you complete the antibiotics, if they ask you to do two follow up tests. One is a renal (kidney) ultrasound just to make sure the anatomy there is okay and the other is a voiding cystourethrogram, or VCUG for short. For babies, it's usually done in a hospital setting, but don't let that scare you. They just put in a catheter and empty the bladder, then they inject fluid with a dye that wil show up on their cameras. When the baby's bladder gets full, the child will void, and they capture that on camera to see if the urine goes straight down and out or if their is any reflux back towards the kidneys. The test only takes about 30 minutes, and while the setting is weird and unfamiliar, it's not painful or particularly scary. Pediatricians frequently call for those two tests just to rule out any more serious issues; it gives them a leg up on whether they should intervene with a medical treatment and/or test for UTI's more frequently.

Anyway, all that to say, if you have to do that in the coming weeks, don't let it scare you. My sister is a pediatrician and she said it's totally normal and the standard tests just about every baby who has a UTI has ordered for them. I hope your little pumpkin is feeling better soon! <3
