How can I help?

My fm/ff's oldest son is living in Arizona (I'm in NJ) for the past 10 years. Unfortunately, he is not here legally. He is such a good person, working two jobs, speaks English and writes fluently. I speak with him every couple of weeks. He sends home money for my fm/ff and family which now is their only source of income (other than me) since the recent turn of adoption events. He needs to stay here; so how can I help him to get a green card? Drivers license etc. He lives in fear about being deported.

Are there any resources/social agencies, community groups, religious organizations that help immigrants obtain legal status?

He does pay taxes; he has a tax id number which I think will help his case. What is also sad it that my fm/ff have not been able to see him in 10 years. They of course can't get visas as well.

Any advice is appreciated.

His chances aren't good. He needs to hire a reputable immigration lawyer, but he's in the same boat as 12 million other people. If he has children who were born here, and are therefore citizens, he has a better chance of obtaining a green card, but it's more likely that the mother of the children would be able to. Then, he would need to apply as her husband. Case in point, we have some friends who did this; the father just in the past year or so obtained a legal status (not citizenship) after 10 years of trying. And that was before they made the process more fair, and therefore more difficult.

I'm no lawyer, and not really well versed in the process, but I have a number of friends who have been through this process, and it's not easy or quick or certain, I hate to say.

I live in Arizona and not a week goes by that I dont read in the newspaper of a Guatemalan Immigrant caught in the desert or involved in an accident while being transported or much worse. It truly breaks my heart. I dont know the answers for you.. but if there is anything I can do from here... please PM me.

I think soon that our social policies will have to change so that we figure out a way to allow people who came here illegally can become citizens.

Pres. Bush (and I'm not his fan) supported an amnesty program that would have imposed fines on those without permission but would have allowed them to earn citizenshp.

Have you seen the new art-type movie: Under the Same Moon? It's about mother caught in similar situation with a young son growing up across the border....
