NBC thinks so. For their new show on America's Favorite Mom, they have a special category for NON MOM's, the description reads:

The non-mom mom
Grandparent, stepmom, or mom to adopted children, each one raising and loving a child. A priceless gift for everybody.

Particularly irriated by the blurb about the mom who has "a daughter of her own, plus six adopted children" What, the adopted children aren't her own?!?!?!

Yes, I'm not usually offended all that easily by this kind of stuff but this one really gets me. I guess if I'm not my kids' mom someone else can make dinner, buy their clothing and pay for their college!

I do not think I can express how bad I think that label is. I know in my heart, soul and every fiber of my being that I am a mom, a plain and simple mom (no adjectives needed) and I just will not let a silly and obviously thoughtless label impact that.

Edit to add: I sent an e-mail to NBC complaining about the label as well

Here is what I sent to them:
As an adoptive mother, I just want to let you know that I find your category of the “non mom mom” incredibly offensive. If you are trying to honor mothers, then do that. If you want to honor women who act like mothers but are not legally mothers, that is one thing, but adoptive mothers ARE mom mom’s. I am my son’s mother in every sense of the word, except that I did not give birth to him. I feed him, comfort him, provide for him and love him completely and totally, unconditionally.
There are really no words for how offended I am by this and I will let others know to boycott your show and your station.

omg....a judge saw fit to call me his mother, the state of CA saw fit to put my name under "MOTHER" on his birth certificate. I care for him, clothe him, feed him. When he says goodnight....he says, "Good night mom." i'm his mom. i could spit fire. I wrote in....the thing that bugs me is i'm afraid that everyone writing will be fabulous for them. even negative publicity is good in hollywood. it is just sad. all of our poor poor NON children. grrrrr...........

I'm another one of those that doesn't get offended. I let a lot go and deal with a lot of stupidity in my own family, but I have to say being labeled a "non mom" is probably the worst thing I've ever been called. They should be ashamded of themselves.

I wrote them an email:

I'm completely apalled by your 'non mom' category including adoptive moms. If I'm not my 18mo old adopted son's mother, who is? Funny how I'm a 'non mom' in your view, even though on every legal document to be found on my son, I'm listed as his mother. His MOTHER. Not his 'kind-of mom' or his 'caretaker' or 'nanny' or certainly not his 'non mom.'
Please remove adoptive mothers from the category of 'non mom.' Foster mothers, women who run orphanages, fine, perfect for that cetegory. Adoptive mothers? Not so much.
