Hello,
I am writing this email to let you know how offended and saddened I am by your category of non-mom for your mothers day contest. I am a mom to my son. I love him more than anything in the world. I had to go through a much more grueling process to become a mom than most other mothers. First, I had to have a social worker inspect my home and my life to make sure that I would be a decent mother. Then I had to fill out numerous forms, have my friends and family members attest to my capabilities to be a good mom, go through criminal background checks (because God forbid a criminal ever become a mother), and have two countries scrutinize my life to approve my desire to be a mom. Then I had to wait and travel to another country to be with my son. My husband and I could have decided to get pregnant - this would have made it a lot easier. And if I did that, my son would have come out of my vagina, which then would have made me eligible for your mom category. But we made a decision to not become pregnant because there are so many children in the world who need amazing parents like my husband and myself. It is so sad the Today Show (which I used to love and watch often) can't realize that I am a MOM.

I also wrote and also called NBC, looking for a few of my children's moms since apparently they believe it is not me. I read that they are going to issue a statement because they have recieved so many emails from infuriated adoptive parents. The Holt Korea forum group of mothers in NYC is planning to go over to NBC with their "non-children". If you want to join just go to the Holt Korea Forum on Holt's site.

Here is the letter I sent to NBC.

As a perspective adoptive Mom to a 1 year old girl in Guatemala I find the whole category of Non-Mom in your "America's Favorite Mom" contest completey offensive. The category of "Non-Mom" is according to the website "for Grandparent, stepmom, or mom to adopted children, each one raising and loving a child. A priceless gift for everybody." Why call adoptive Mom's "Non-Mom's"? We will care for them 24 hours a day for the rest of their lives. We will cry when they cry, laugh when they laugh and worry about them for the rest of our lives. How is that different from any other type of Mom? I am just appalled at the ignorance of this campaign and the labeling. We as perspective adoptive parents struggle every day with labels that other people associate with adoption: "You're not their "real" mom", "Do you have any children of your "own?", "How long have you had them?" and now we can add "Non-Mom" to the list of ever offensive comments. I believe it is the responsibility of the press to help educate people on adoption, not to further the public's ignorance in regards to adoption.

I would appreciate it greatly if you would apologize for your use of the term 'Non-Mom". Every adoptive parent will thank you if you educate people on the wonderful aspects of adoption.

it seriously takes a lot for me to be offended...once i'm offended...it takes a lot to get me involved...but darn it, that is just wrong! i emailed all the flower people, too. i don't know that it will help at all....and i think that is what i am most frustrated about. i think i am also hurt because i already feel like a fake mom sometimes...like that is how people view me....and NBC just comes out and says I am fake. I guess I'll be non-watching their station and non-purchasing some flowers this holiday. bug.

A non mom? Are you kidding me? I've sat waiting for over 13 hours for each of my son's 3 open heart surgeries. I have spent the last day watching him go through severe withdrawal and I get called a non mom? What a herd of idiots.

I am disgusted with your use of the word "non-mom." I am my children's mother in every sense of the word. In the spot on their birth certificates where it says mother, my name is listed...not someone elses! I am the one that comforts them in times of pain and fear, provides for all their needs, and loves them unconditionally. I am their mother. I am NOT a non-mom. I waited years to become a mother only to be belittled and degraded by your show. Shame on you for perpetuating antiquated stereotypes about adoptive parents.

I am writing in regards to NBCs "America's Favorite Mom" competition. I am a really easygoing person and usually don't write these kinds of e-mails. But your categorization of adoptive mothers as "non-moms" is completely offensive.

No, I did not give birth to my daughter - her wonderful birthmom did that. I adopted her when she was a baby. But if the legal systems of two different countries plus my state say that I'm her mom, who are YOU to call me a non-mom. My daughter is my very own daughter and I am her mom. I am not her babysitter or her foster mom or her caretaker or her teacher or her aunt. I am simply mommy and we are simply a family, like any other. It is unfortunate that NBC is responsible for perpetuating stereotypes that rate adoptive families as somehow second class to so called "real families." Trust me, we are as real as you get.

I am extremely disappointed in NBC and in Teleflora, and I will be recommending to my friends and family that they boycott both this Mother's Day, unless this is changed.

I have never written/sent an e-mail over comments made by are media. But this has really upset me. Here is what I wrote to NBC:

As an adoptive Mother, I am deeply offended by your term of “Non-Mom”!!

How can you give that term to someone who is willing to fly across the globe to help give a loving, caring life to a child? Anyone who cares for, loves and support a child on a daily bases, through thick and thin, is a “Mom”. It doesn’t matter how that child came into your life, you are the Mom. You are the one who is kissing boo-boo’s; staying up all night with a sick child; attending all their school and after school events; sacrificing your time, money and sleep, just like a person who gives birth to a child.

As my cousin told me, it only takes 30 seconds, if that, to get pregnant, but that still doesn’t make you a mom!

I am deeply disappointed with NBC!
