I grew up in Milwaukee and lived there until I was 22 years old. I LOVED it! There is no better place to be in the summer with all the festivals going on. I miss it so much. I am out of touch as to the nicer areas to live though. Totally depends on how far you are willing to drive I guess. Good luck!

Suburbs of Cedarburg, Mequon, Waukesha and Brookfield. Best schools, shopping, etc. and close enough to enjoy all the city has to offer.

If you need to be between Milwaukee and Chicago because of airports, Caledonia or Oak Creek are nice.

River Hills is nice but super expensive.

My husband and I lived in Milwaukee for 9 years and moved to TX 3 years ago. You will LOVE all the festivals in the summers. We really miss it! We lived in Waukesha and Hartland before buying a house in New Berlin. We loved New Berlin and their schools.

We live in Cudahy, 4 blocks from Lake Michigan and 10 minutes from downtown Milwaukee. DH grew up here and I moved here 9 years ago. I love the Milwaukee area! Lots to do, shopping and restaurants are great!

Traffic isn't bad anywhere. But where is the job?

We might be selling our house in Pewaukee very soon :-)

One thing to look at it, in addition to schools, is property taxes. They vary largely from city to city. Did I mention Pewaukee has some of the lowest :-)

Also, if for some reason you need/want a fenced yard, be very careful where you buy because many/most communities don't allow them. Did I mention we have an awesome, large fenced in yard (actually with a dual fence - part for the dogs and their poop and part for the kids).

In all seriousness, I'm not trying to sell my house to you. Just giving good things to ponder as we only moved here 3.5 years ago and almost made some bad mistakes on taxes and fences...

I lived in Wauwatosa before I moved to Minneapolis. It was a great place to live, close to the city, shopping and with great school. I want to echo what some of the others have mentioned which is property taxes in WI are really high, especially in Milwaukee county. Whitefish Bay, Shorewood and Wauwatosa are all really popular, but in Milwaukee County.

Brookfield, Germantown, Mequon and Menomonee Falls are nice too, just a little further out. It really depends where you are going to work. Morning and evening traffic can be bad depending on where you are going.

Good luck on your move. We live in Germantown, about 23 miles NW of the city. I work downtown Milwaukee, and this location is great. About a 30-40 minute commute to work, depending on traffic, so city life is very accessible, but we live in a community that's slightly rural (there's a farm across the street from our subdivision, yet we live an equi-distent 8 minute drive from 3 different Starbucks). My husband & I have lived in this area all our lives. In the city, there are definately some neighborhoods to be careful of. If you'd like more info, please PM me.

we live in muskego. my oldest has received special ed there since he was 3 (hes now 7) and im very happy with the public school he attends.

We just moved from Waterford to Eau Claire, WI. We still have our house for sale there. It is not too far from Milwaukee (20-25 miles) and is a great smaller community with a really good school district.

Our home is on a (sort of) dead end road. The only people that drive on our road, live on that street. We really liked it there and loved our house, but we wanted to be closer to my family and my dh got a really good job up here.

My sister lived in White Fish Bay (basically a suburb) and loved it. They moved to TN due to her husband's job.

Milwaukee has some nice suburbs, such as Mequon, New Berlin, Oak Creek, Waukesha, Brookfield, Waterford, White Fish Bay, Watertown, and Franklin - any of those are nice.

My father grew up in Whitefish Bay. We visited a lot. It was beautiful! I really miss Wisconsin!!! I'd love to move back but right now it's not in the cards. I live in Florida and, quite honestly, I don't want to do long winters. Good luck!!!
