OT: Special Songs

I've had a special song for my first son, Joseph, who was stillborn that I sing to him everytime I visit his grave. I've wanted to have a special song for Brian too, but, never really heard anythng that "clicked" for me. I finally found it. I mean I'd heard it before but, suddenly this time I really listened to the words and realized....THIS is my "Brian's song". The song is These Are The Moments by Edwin McCain. Though most would think it comes across as a love song.....for me the words are PERFECT in describing my feelings for my son, Brian.

Do any of you have a special song for your son/daughter? It would be fun to share!!

Lori

For our daughter Katie, it's "Gracie" by Ben Folds (perfectly describes our relationship with her) and/or "The power of two" by Indigo Girls (listened to it on the way to the delivery room).

For our son, right now, it's Ocean Sized Love by Leigh Nash. Hopefully when he comes home we'll have a song less about separation.

Maria's special song is Lullabye by the Dixie Chicks. It was the first song I created a montage to her with.

I love the words to this song:

They didn't have you were I come from
Never knew the best was yet to come
Life began when I saw your face
And I hear your laugh like a serenade

How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough? Is forever enough?
How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough, cuz I'm never never giving you up

I slip in bed when you're asleep
To hold you close and feel your breath on me
Tomorrow will be so much to do
So tonight I'll drift in a dream with you

How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough? Is forever enough?
How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough, cuz I'm never never giving you up

As you wander through this troubled world
In search of all things beautiful
You can close your eyes and you're miles away
And hear my voice like a serenade

How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough? Is forever enough?
How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough, cuz I'm never never giving you up

How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough? Is forever enough?
How long do you want to be loved?
Is forever enough, cuz I'm never never giving you up

Is forever enough cuz I'm never never giving you up

That is the song that closes my CD of songs to appreciate my daughters.

The other day I heard another one that I wished I'd added to the CD: Truly, Madly, Deeply by Savage Garden.

I love this topic. I always listen to, and have, songs for people and special occasions. I find they often choose me.

Julie, Power of Two is one of my favorite songs.

But my first song for DS 1 was "Feels Like Today" by Rascal Flatts. I had been waiting forever to get a referral. I heard this song on the radio on the way to work, and I just had a "feeling." Sure enough, that morning I got "the call" about Evan. The lyrics are perfect--and I always think of the moment he came into my life when I hear them.

I Woke up this morning
With this feeling inside me that I can't explain
like a weight that I've carried
Been carried away, away

But I know something is coming
I don't know what it is
But I know it's amazing, you save me
My time is coming
And I'll find my way out of this longest drought...

It feels like today I know
It feels like today I'm sure
It's the one thing that's missin'
The one thing I'm wishin'
Life's sacred blessin' and then
It feels like today
Feels like today

You treat life like a picture
But it's not a moment thats frozen in time
It's not gonna wait
Til you make up your mind, at all

So while this storm is breaking
While there's light at the end of the tunnel
Keep running towards it
Releasing the pressure, that's my heartache
Soon this dam will break

And it feels like today I know,
it feels like today, I'm sure
It's the one thing that's missin'
The one thing you're wishin'
Life's sacred blessin' and then,
It feels like today

Feels like, feels like your life changes
Feels like, feels like your life changes

It's the one thing that's missin'
The one thing you're wishin'
Life's sacred blessin' and then,
It feels like today

Feels like, feels like your life changes
Feels like, feels like your life changes

Godspeed

One more song that has become my song for DS1 now that he is home is one that most people have not heard of. It's calld Godspeed by Radney Foster. It makes me cry whenever I hear it. It's one thing to read it (below), but I wholeheartedly suggest checking it out on youtube at: YouTube - Godspeed - Radney Foster

Dragon tales and the water is wide
Pirate's sail and lost boys fly
Fish bite moonbeams every night
And I love you

Chorus: Goodspeed, little man, Sweet dreams little man
Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings
Godspeed, sweet dreams

The rockets racer's all tuckered out
Superman's in pajamas on the couch
Goodnight Moon, we'll find the mouse
And I love you

Chorus: Goodspeed, little man, Sweet dreams little man
Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings
Godspeed,sweet dreams

God bless mommy and match box cars
God bless dad and thanks for the stars
God hears"amen"wherever we are
And I love you

Chorus: Goodspeed, little man, Sweet dreams little man
Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings
Godspeed, Godspeed, Godspeed, Sweet dreams.

Can you tell I've made playlists for my friends with kids?

The chorus of this one is one of my favorites ever written.

Father and Daughter (Paul Simon)
YouTube - Paul Simon ~ Father & Daughter

If you leap awake
In the mirror of a bad dream
And for a fraction of a second
You can't remember where you are
Just open your window
And follow your memory upstream
To the meadow in the mountain
Where we counted every falling star

I believe the light that shines on you
Will shine on you forever
And though I can't guarantee
There's nothing scary hiding under your bed
I’m gonna stand guard
Like a postcard of a Golden Retriever
And never leave till I leave you
With a sweet dream in your head

I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
Who loved his daughter more than I love you

Trust your intuition
It's just like going fishing
You cast your line
And hope you'll get a bite
But you don't need to waste your time
Worrying about the market place
Try to help the human race
Struggling to survive its harshest night

I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
Who loved his daughter more than I love you

I'm gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you'll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
Who loved his daughter more than I love you

Last one, I promise

It's kind of slow for me, but I think that this is the song that is going to be my song for DS2. Especially because he's such a strong personality. And since he will look different from his brother and me, and possibly experience racism...this line is perfect:

There'll always be people to make it hard for a while
But you'll change their heads when they see you smile

Child of Mine (Carole King)
YouTube - Mary Cassatt (Child of Mine)

Although you see the world different than me
Sometimes I can touch upon the wonders that you see
All the new colors and pictures you've designed
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

You don't need direction, you know which way to go
And I don't want to hold you back, I just want to watch you grow
You're the one who taught me you don't have to look behind
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Nobody's gonna kill your dreams
Or tell you how to live your life
There'll always be people to make it hard for a while
But you'll change their heads when they see you smile

The times you were born in may not have been the best
But you can make the times to come better than the rest
I know you will be honest if you can't always be kind
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine,
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

Child of mine, child of mine
Oh yes, sweet darling
So glad you are a child of mine

While I was waiting for Mario to come home the song Beyond the Horizon by Bob Dylan reminded me of him and still does:

Beyond the horizon, behind the sun
At the end of the rainbow life has only begun
In the long hours of twilight 'neath the stardust above
Beyond the horizon it is easy to love

My wretched heart's pounding
I felt an angel's kiss
My memories are drowning
In mortal bliss

Beyond the horizon, in the Springtime or Fall
Love waits forever for one and for all

Beyond the horizon across the divide
'Round about midnight, we'll be on the same side
Down in the valley the water runs cold
Beyond the horizon someone prayed for your soul

I'm touched with desire
What don't I do?
I'll throw the logs on the fire
I'll build my world around you

Beyond the horizon, at the end of the game
Every step that you take, I'm walking the same

Beyond the horizon the night winds blow
The theme of a melody from many moons ago
The bells of St. Mary, how sweetly they chime
Beyond the horizon I found you just in time

It's dark and it's dreary
I ponder in vain
I'm weakened, I'm weary
My repentance is plain

Beyond the horizon o'er the treacherous sea
I still can't believe that you've set aside your love for me
Beyond the horizon, 'neath crimson skies
In the soft light of morning I'll follow you with my eyes
Through countries and kingdoms and temples of stone
Beyond the horizon right down to the bone

It's late in the season
Never knew, never cared
Whatever the reason
Someone's life has been spared

Beyond the horizon the sky is so blue
I've got more than a lifetime to live lovin' you

Also the song Trains and Boats and Planes by Astrud Gilberto always reminds me of DS (it's a long story) and Northern Sky by Nick Drake.

Great Thread!

Our favorite song for our adoption was by Steven Curtis Chapman..WHEN LOVE TAKES YOU IN.. It is a song about adoption. Right before we left for pick up, we were able to see Steven Curtis Chapman in concert and he sang that song.. My husband and I bawled through the whole thing...

A song we listen to over and over the night we got the call we were OUT of PGN, was I'M COMING HOME, by Chris Daughtry...

Alright, My son has 2 songs. I see that one is very popular. Every time I hear Godspeed (by the Dixie Chicks...same song though!) I cry and I'm not an emotional person at all! The other one I heard while on our first visit trip. Stepmom with Julia Roberts was on TV and Marvin Gaye started singing Ain't no Mountain High Enough, it instantly became Mommy and Jack's song and it still gets me!

Heart

For us there are three that we listened to constantly waiting for Isabel to come and cried and cried in our waiting
Now we listen to them and cry because we are so happy that she is actually here- one year , almost, and sometimes we still can't believe how blessed we are:

Baby You Belong By Faith Hill
Lullaby By Dixie Chicks
You 'll Be in My Heart (From Tarzan) By Phill Collins
