Almost 10 months old: not crawling

Hi again, DD does not do any crawling. We've been progressivley giving her more tummy time, and she's getting stonger every day. She just started doing all fours, like the bridge pose in yoga, for a second or so at a time. She'll wiggle forward if we use our hands for her to push from. Is there anything else we can do? We also got that rolly thing from Infantino, which she kind of likes.

My son Julian came home at 8 months old and couldn't even turn from his back to his tummy. He could sit up and that's all he could really do. I took two months off work and worked with him on a daily basis. I'd give him belly time and during the belly time I'd bend his legs and place them underneath him prompting him to raise himeself using his arms (he would sweat like he was running a marathon). Took us two and 1/2 months continuing the exercises and just two weeks ago (at 10 months old) he started crawling!!! It's time consuming and definatley takes lots of patience but it'll happen!

These babies are not give the proper belly time while in foster care. But they all manage to catch up when they come home.

Hi there, I think we had similar USE appts?

My son is 9 months. He cannot sit up, crawl, etc...we've been giving him tummy time but have also called the State Early Intervention program.... your Pediatrician will make a referral to you. This will provide OT, PT, things like that if you feel that she isn't up to speed.

Our tummy time is okay here... it's slow going because he absolutely hates it.

Good luck.

It's funny, but I was just reading about crawling last night in "What to Expect the First Year." It says babies are crawling much later these days b/c of lack of tummy time. And that many babies don't crawl at all... just go straight to walking. In fact, b/c there is so much variation of "normal" crawling isn't even considered a developmental milestone anymore.

Sounds like you're doing a great job!

Marco came home at 5 months old. He never really crawled. He did this scoot type thing and went straight to walking. We did tons of tummy time and tried to get him to crawl but he never did it really.

I have friends whose children also never really crawled. I think that some kids just go straight to walking.

My wee one came home at 9 months old, and she too wasn't crawling. She did try hard to figure it out, like your baby is doing, but she didn't actually crawl until she was 10.5 months old. Shortly thereafter, she was pulling herself to a stand. Now, at 14.5mo, she is cruising well and taking a few independent steps (up to 5). Still behind the charts we are used to, but doing just fine.

With my daughter, I believe the reasons it took her so long to crawl were (a) not enough prior tummy time, (b) it took a while to get the coordination thing down, and (c) she couldn't get herself back to a sitting position if she stretched out til her knees were behind her butt, so she usually preferred not to venture to that point. I worked on teaching her to sit up from an on-the-tummy position, and she was crawling within days after that.

As long as your baby is making progress, it's a bit early to worry. Sounds like he's getting close to crawling, perhaps within the next month.

I see she just came home last week, right? My advice would be to just keep doing what you are, but give her time/space. Everything in her life has changed and she may just not be ready. I'm sure when she is, she'll be off at lightening speed.

Keep her in the floor and tons of tummy time. Eventually she will crawl.

Crawled at 11 months

My daughter came home at 7mos,was not great about sitting up oin her own until 8 mos and did not roll over until about 9 months,. We had and early intervention assessment at 8 mos she qualified for services. So from 8 - mos thru the present (services are for 1 year then she'll be re-evaluated) She crawled at 11 months and started walking at 15 months. I highly reccomend you contact EI and get an assessment its a wonderful program and it helps a lot to catch up with other kids.
Good Luck. We were never really worried, but having the services helped us know what to do to help our daughter.

sounds like you are already working with her. keep it up! eli was 10 months when he came home, and like alexismandyjr's son, had not ever had tummy time...so he lacked head control, he couldn't roll over, sit up, etc. we worked with him- moving his extremeties, putting toys just out of reach so he had to move to get them, got him an exersaucer to get him used to being in a position other than lying on his back or tied to someone's belly, held his hands to help him stand, held his hands to help him stand and let him kick at a ball....etc. in one month, he rolled over, sat up, pulled up, and crawled...lol! but it was then another 6 and a half months before he walked even one step. he was evaluated for PT, and went several times for monitoring sessions, but they just gave us things to work on at home, which we were already doing, to help him progress.

my opinion......these babies are held non-stop, and so they do not get the stimulation necessary to encourage them to move around. if someone is going to carry them everywhere, why crawl? lol! be patient....i'm sure very soon you'll be saying, "get back here!"

It sounds like you are doing everything right. Our DD came home at just over 9 months old and she also wasn't crawling yet. Within about two weeks she was slowly crawling across the room and very shortly after that she was crawling very quickly where ever she wanted to go. Your doing great by working with her, i'm sure she'll get it any day!

Just wanted to second this. My bio son never crawled but went straight to walking. And is now a perfectly normal 9 year old. It sounds like you are doing a great job working with her, but don't worry that she 'has' to crawl.

Good luck!

Both my DS and DD did not crawl until 10 1/2 months. They both came home when they were 6 months old. When they came home neither one could sit up alone, they hated tummy time and they had poor upper body strength. To help build up their upper body, I had them use their exersaucer, bumbo seat, boppy pillow, and playmat. I would rotate them during the day, to keep them entertained and help them get some strength in their upper body. It did not take too long for them to be able to sit up by themselves, to roll over and then they both did the 3 legged crawl which was too cute! Both my children also did not walk until 16 months and now they are into everything. Just keep doing what you are doing and before you know it your little one will be on the move.

Red face

My daughter came home at 13 months of age. She couldn't sit up, hold her head up, or anything. She was a floppy baby. Within a few days of being with us she started sitting up. She started crawling at 18 months old.

Definitely give her some time.

Best of luck to you!

Early Intervention gave us all sorts of things to do with him (basically just lay him on his tummy and spread his toys around him but he HATED that so we quit), so we let him do his own thing.

Around 13 months, he started scooting everywhere he needed to go on his bottom, then started reaching forward to get things, eventually onto all fours, and by 14 and a half months he was very solidly crawling.
