since we're on the ss# theme...another question....

i went to the ss office with mia's documents (guat passport with visa (we visited prior to pick up, birth certificate, legal name change documents, etc) to get her number. i only had a copy of the coc. i foolishly sent it off to have her name changed not realizing the turn around was 10months!

anyway, after being there a long time, the lady said mia would get her number after they did "research". she said i would have to come back with the new coc so she would be listed as a citizen.

i did get her card (after 2 months) which lists her name and number. it does not say anything about not being a citizen. does that mean i'm done, or do i still have to go back to that horrible office??

i was under the impression that if they don't consider you a citizen it states so on the card.

Yes, you will have to go back. Maybe do a little research and find another office near you. Even a little drive might be better than dealing with them again!

The card looks the same regardless of whether they are listed as a citizen or not in the SSA computers. You do have to show a COC for her to be listed as a citizen and not a legal resident.

Sorry! I know that isn't what you wanted to hear! It should be quite simple next time though!

Get yourself a big old Cafe Mocha with extra whip cream (or whatever you are into!) to celebrate after you are done with this final hurdle. You are in the home stretch!

Maybe I don't understand the question.

A social security card does not have anything to do with citizenship. A legal permanant resident (green card holder) has a social security card that looks just like a citizen's social security card, and when a perm res becomes a citizen, their ss card remains exactly the same.

A temporary resident, or a conditional resident, (and probably a bunch of other folks with different kinds of status) generally get social security cards that clearly say "NOT FOR EMPLOYMENT PURPOSES" or some such thing in big letters across the card.

Unless your daughter's ss card has some condition written across her card in big letters, or her ss card is in her birth name, I don't see any reason you would have to go back to ss.
