Nose Bleeds at Night
Hi everyone, Madelin had a bad nose bleed last night and it went on and off all morning. Now tonight she just cried out looking for her pillow and when I went in there was blood again all on the pillow. Anyone else experience this. There seems to be so much blood god its scary. Mindy

I don't really have advice but Emmi's has had a couple of nosebleeds at night. Once there was just blood everywhere, all over the pillow and her sheets and quilt. It is scary! Does she get nosebleeds during the day? Emmi will have them occasionally but not too often. I wouldn't worry too much if it doesn't happen frequently.

Do you have a humidifer? When our children move from a moist climate to the dry heat "climate" of our winter houses it can cause nose bleeds. I know if I forget to turn on the humidifer or put a bowl of water over the vent that my DS will wake with a nosebleed. It can also be a sign of a sinus infection so if the humidifer doesn't do the trick, see your doc. Hope this helped.

AngelsMama said exactly what I was going to type when I read the original post. My son will have nose bleeds but no fever with a sinus infection. We also use a humidifier and they have some SIMPLY SALINE nose spray for infants and toddlers with a nozzle you cannot insert too far up their nose. Since it is just saline you can use it before bed, during the night, and first thing in the morning to help keep nasal tissue from drying out while your central heat runs all night. But if she seems to not feel well I would definitely have her checked for a sinus infection.

We woke up one night to Ana crying 'boo boo'. She had a huge nosebleed. We put a humidifier in her room and have not had a repeat. The ped also suggests saline drops.

Usually the most common reasons for nosebleeds can be caused by:
1. Dry/Cold air 2. Too Warm/ Dry air 3. ALLERGIES 4. Sinus infections 5. Colds, especially if there was alot of nasal congestion 6. Certain medications Make sure she has a lot of fluids and get a cool mist humidifier. not a warm one. If it seems like there is too much blood (use your parent/mom gauge for that), then take her to the doctor. Nosebleeds usually aren't cause for large concern unless the baby ALREADY has blood disorders or other illnesses/problems. Good luck!

My doctor gave me 2 suggestions when this happened to me. The first was to have her sleep with a humidifier in her room. That only works if I can keep her in her room. The second was to put just a little bit of vaseline in her nose in the morning and evenings. Just a really thin coat with a q-tip. If that doesn't work or if there are other symptoms then have her checked out by a doctor.

I am going to add to cjrogers list....
Nose-picking! Sounds gross, but a major cause of nose bleeds. My son is a "picker" and just about every time he gets a nose bleed, it's because he has been at it again! We have had some long talks about how he really needs to stop (cleaning blood out of pillow cases and sheets is NOT fun!!!) Jenna

From someone who gets nosebleeds quite often I can reply from experience. Although it seems like a lot of blood it really isn't that much. If it doesn't stop at all within an hour, I would take her to the hospital. They can cauterize (sp) the blood vessels in her nose and that will stop the bleeding, and keep it from coming back for quite a while. I can't imagine how scary it is having your little one get a nose bleed, I still freak out if I get one! Anyway, make sure to use a humidifier in her bedroom at night. The dry air is what triggers them for me almost every time, although sometimes a hot shower will do it too.

John got nosebleeds a lot when he first came home. They have started up again recently with the heat cranked at home. He usually gets his when he is sleeping too.
