Question day trip to Lake Atitlan...anyone done this??

We will be leaving soon for our pick up trip and since we have a Friday embassy appointment, we will be in Guatemala through the weekend. We would like to spend either Sat. or Sun. at Lake Atitlan. Can anyone give me any advice about what to see or where to go once there?
The other day we plan on going to the zoo and open air market in Guatemala City.

Any ideas would be appreciated...TIA!!!

Kris

We did a day trip to Lake Atitilan when we picked up our son Last January! We stopped at a market on the way down there, and took a boat tour around the lake. then went to another market near the lake! We had a great tour guide, that my agency recommended the same people also took us to the Embassy and to Antigua. It was a REAL LONG DAY and Exhausting but totally worth it!!!!!!
Let me know if you want to know who we used.

We went to the the lake for the day too. We almost felt an overnight might have been better -- it's a long and winding drive out there. We heard that there are a couple fo great hotels there. The highlight for us was taking a boat to one of the very tiny villages where we were met by a small but enthusastic group of children and adults who wanted us to see their beautiful textiles. We bought a beautiful table runner for our dining room which makes a colorful memory for us of the day. We asked to take the picture of the woman who made our piece and it made it even more special.

It would be a 6 hour round trip but definitely worth it. This is one of their most beautiful sites to enjoy!

I did not do a day trip, but I did serve on a ten day mission trip in Santiago Atitlan. It is beautiful, and if you can get out there, you definitely should.

Have fun!

We went for a 3 day trip. It was beautiful! The drive is long, but seeing the culture is priceless...I would do it again.

If there is any way you can spend the night, do it. It will be a very very long and tiring day if you don't, especially traveling with a child. It's a looooong ride. I'd head out Saturday mid afternoon so as to get there before the sun goes down (cant' imagine that ride at night) and then spend the day sightseeing and ride back to GC late afternoon Sunday.

If you're only there for a day or two, I'd also recommend a guide!

I 2nd the idea for an overnight trip.......it is a very long, bumpy, somewhat scary ride at times (the chicken buses speed past & road was under construction as of last October).

You could spend the night in Pana & then take a tour of the Lake the next day (I did another post about private boat I hired for that for about $40). I went to 2 villages ....which was plenty, one large and one small (Santa Catarina).

Thanks everyone...I didn't realize it was a 6 hour trip! Yes, an overnight would be much better. I appreciate all your comments.

Blessings,
Kris
