Applied for SS#!

We just did it! Went to the SS office and gave them the CoC (came home on IR-3), his passport and the whole packet we got from our attorney. The Protocolo and BC are in Spanish - she made photocopies and said that they need to translate them and it will take up to 9 weeks to get the card, but he will have the number in a week! I just need to go down there and get it.
I can check this chore as DONE, Whew.

We just got home last night and the man at the Dallas immigration said we have 5 business days to get SSN. I had never heard that before. We came home on IR-3. He said take visa and then when COC came go back with that. I also know that you can request an SSN automatically on Visa form but he said they won't issue one that way. Anyone know if this is true.

Thanks,
Michele.

Michele, never heard that - I don't think it's true. It doesn't make sense. When I tried in January, the SS office said I need to bring the CoC, so I HAD to wait for that. And then I waited several more weeks anyway! You'll be fine.

Welcome home!

Total baloney. Almost no one gets a social security number for their child within 5 days of them arriving home. Some wait a year or more.

I have heard of people being asked to check a box on a form at the Embassy or at Immigration and they will supposedly get a SS# automatically, but I have never heard of anyone actually successfully receiving a number this way.

And you don't need a COC to get a number. For the child to be listed as a citizen with SSA, you do need to show a COC, but you don't need one to get a number issued. (Assuming the office knows what they are doing!)
