black spots on the whites of eyes

On another post someone had posted that Mayan's sometimes have black spots on the whites of their eyes.

My son has some. I have always been curious about the spots.

I have never heard this before. Can anyone share their knowledge?

Thanks,
K

Me too.

My 2 year old has a couple. One in each eye.
His pediatrician is not at all concerned, so I'm not. Just curious.

Our 12 year old daughter had these, but they seem to have faded.. As she grew older, her eye color went from almost black to a light brown.. She has some Cherokee Indian on her birthfather's side.. Anyway, the Dr said it was due to hyperpigmentation and darker people sometimes have this.. I have an AA friend, and also a friend from Puerto Rico now that I think about it, who also has this.. I think it would have more to do with skin tone than being Mayan..

Our youngest daughter is definitely Mayan ~ sirnames are Mayan, birthmother's first language was not spanish, small round eyes, darker skin, straight hair, bmom from Coban, etc... and she does not have these black spots on her eyes..

I am of Sicilian decent and I have those spots on the whites of my eyes too. My eye doctor said it is nothing to be concerned about and tends to happen to those of African decent but I imagine since it is just extra pigmentation that it can happen to anyone who is on the darker side. I have never had eye problems.

Yes, our pediatrician says it happens in darker skinned people and that it may fade as my dd get older. Causes no problems.

Matthew has a spot in one of his eyes, too. Dr said no big deal, just extra pigmentation.

Don't worry!!!

We have two African American children as well as our children from Guatemala. My husband is also an eye doctor and says that for the most part these are harmless.

These are usually are thinner parts of the eye where you can begin to see the underlying part which is a bluish purple color. Somewhat like a mole on the eye. Nothing harmful or serious. There is a medical term for them and he told me but I am not attempting to spell it!!!

Anyhow, they are mostly seen in people with darker skin but nothing to worry about. If it was anything different your pediatrician should have picked up on them.

Hope this helps!!
