Needed - Crockpot Stew Recipe

I want to make beef stew this weekend but the recipe I have for making it in the crockpot always comes out really flat tasting.

I have a great recipe for stovetop but now don't have the time to saute and strain and blend and add after 2 hours......

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

I'm bumping for you because I am interested too.

I made some a couple weekends ago and it was good, but wasn't 'thick' enough.

Enjoy!

Guiness beer (alcohol cooks off) and Worchestershire (sp?) sauce. Oh, I also use a light sprinkle of Lawrey's Season salt. Toss the beef cubes really good in flower and then brown the outside in some oil. Throw it in a crock pot with what ever veggies and let sit on low for 8 hrs. If its still liquidy, add some corn starch. Here's recipe:

Good luck from the Irish!

Ok, this one sounds weird but is tasty and you can user a cheaper grade of beef because the ginger ale makes it very tender.

stew meat
carrots
potatoes
onions
dry onion soup mix 1 packet
diced tomatoes (1 can)
Ginger Ale (1 can)
just dump and cook on low or medium until done.

This is a very inexpensive but pretty tasty dinner.

Here is how I make my beef stew.

I take lean stew meat and onions and brown on stove when it is done browning I add in a packet of beefy onion soup mix and get it cooked in with the meat. IN the crock pot I put 1 1/2 boxes of beef broth, 1 can of diced tomatoes in juice and 1 can of tomato sauce. I also add in the remaning packet of beefy onion soup mix to the liquid. Then I add in my potatoes, carrots and celery. THen to my meat mixture I add a tablespoon or so of flour and cook up for a minute or so. I add the meat mixture to the crockpot and take a ladle full of the liquid and add to my skillet and loosen up all the stuff on the bottom. I bring that to a boil scraping all the goodies from the pan and add this to my crockpot too. Then I just cook all day

I actually have a beef stew in the oven right now made from a receipe I pulled out of yesterdays paper. Here is the link: Basic Beef Stew with Potatoes, Carrots and Peas
You brown the meat and cook the onions and garlic first, but then put it in the oven to simmer for 2-3 hours before addiing carrots and potoatoes. I'll let you know how it turns out after dinner!

Much the same but here it is anyway..

I brown the meat after rolling it in flour and Famous Dave's Steak and Burger seasoning.
Once brown I put in the crock pot with french onion soup, golden mushroom soup and beef broth. If I don't happen to have french onion soup I use the dry onion soup mix and an extra can of beef broth.
I add the veggies,( carrots, potatoes, celery) cook on low all day or most of it and it turns out great!

The boys love those beer bread mixes which turn out so hearty and thick. Great for soping up the gravy.

Happy cooking! Renee

This may be a stupid question - I love love to cook but some days I need something I can throw in the crockpot in the morning and not brown anything. I've also had the problem of my crockpot concoctions tasting boring.

Can you just throw the beef into the crockpot raw?
Has anyone tried that?

Thanks!

I just made this one and my family liked it enough to eat ALL of it!

We call it PIRATE BEEF STEW

Put the following items in the crockpot in layers:
2 cups carrots (baby carrots or cut up)
1 large baking potato, peeled and cut into chunks
1 onion chopped
1 teaspoon chopped garlic
1 can lima beans, drained (can use green beans)
1 pound stew beef, cut up into bite size
1 teaspoon chopped garlic (yes, a second teaspoon!)
On top of this pour:

8 ounces V-8 juice
4 ounces organic beef broth
Cover and cook on LOW for 8 hours. Then remove 1/2 cup of liquid, cool, and stir in 3 tablespoons flour. Add the flour mixture back to the crockpot, stir and cook for 3 more hours.

yes you can throw raw beef in a crock pit. we double the following recipe so we have leftovers, cook time is 7 hours in my slow cooker.

Beef Stew
cook on low for 6-7 hours depending on slow cooker

1 lb stew beef
1 can tomato sauce
1 pkg beef stew seasoning (we use mccormick)
1t garlic powder
1T worcestershire sauce
1 onion, chopped
frozen peas, corn, carrots

serve with cornbread. or if you don't want to serve with cornbread add potatoes to the mix. as for the veggies, whatever is in your freezer works great. i just pour until i like the look of the mix, little more, little less, doesn't effect cook time.

Just as a follow up to the receipe I posted above . . . I tried to 1/2 it and when I went to add the carrots and potoates, the liquid was almost gone. So if you 1/2 the receipe, only 1/2 the meat and vegetables, not the liquids. I just added some more beef broth and it was fine, but more soupy than stewy at that point. Good flavor though in my opinion. Personally I think it would have been fine without browing the meat as well.
