Costs of Readoption?

I am still trying to get DH to go with me on a visit trip and am now using the Visa excuse to get him to go. He is very conscious of money, so if I told him we could save money in the long run if we visited that may definately sway him to my side. So, how much does it cost to readopt once home in the US if our daughter comes home on the IR4 visa? How much time does it take to fill out all the paperwork? Is it easy or difficult?

We live in Rhode Island and it didn`t cost us anything to readopt. All we needed to do was make a copy of all our paper work and fill out a couple of forms, we had to bring these to the court, and they gave us a date at another court to re-adopt, about a month later, we didn`t hire a lawyer. Don`t think I am much help with you trying to get you hubby to go with you, lol. Good luck. Tammy

Hi,
The readoption was quite easy. We live in Wisconsin and did not visit Eddie before pick-up. I got the forms from our agency, we had one or two notarized, I drove to the St.Croix county courthouse and was directed to a specific department. I met with the clerk, she took the forms and stamped something and gave us a court date about a month away. We showed up with all the kids, the process took 5 minutes and we were done. I don't remember paying anything, but if we did it was a very small fee. I might have sent some more forms in after that, but I remember getting the Wisconsin birth certificate in the mail. It was a piece of cake.

It totally and completely depends on your state and sometimes county. You need to find out exactly what needs to be done in your state and county to really know how difficult and/or costly it will be. You can't base it on what someone else in another state did/paid. It can range from free and easy, to very expensive and involved.

You might start another thread with a title asking about readoption and mentioning your state. And/or do a search for 'readoption' and your state name. (If you aren't finding anything, PM me and I'll do some searching.)

If you or your spouse has a prepaid legal plan through your work, a readopt using a lawyer may be covered. Ours was. We only had to pay the actual filing fees ($100 in GA). It was covered as an "uncontested adoption" or something like that.

It was cheap. Filing fees were like $125 in Mn. And a very good thing to do as it gives you a US birth certificate which will be helpful later in life.

Like others have said, it depends on the state. In Connecticut you fill out a couple of forms and pay $150. Whether you visit or not, you're probably going to have to file a name change form anyway (since her paperwork will have her Guatemalan first and middle names) so I just filed everything at the same time. No lawyer is needed. And it's probably a good idea to readopt even if you visit.

Humm... For purposes of getting your husband to go visit (which is such a wonderful experience), I'd tell him that readoption costs somewhere just north of $90,000.

That being said, different states do have different requirements, but, with notable exceptions, it is neither prohibitively expensive or difficult.

I hope he goes.

You may want to start a new thread for your state since they all vary but the COC is federal so that is the same regardless. I think it's about $470.
Remember to figure in all his travel expenses too and see where you end up money wise.
My DH did not want to visit for personal reasons so I went without him.
Good Luck

Check the county where you live. Our county MADE us use an adoption attorney and cost us about $1300.00 dollars. The county right next to us was much easier and cost $75.00 (we were a baseball throw away from the line).

We have used an attorney for both of our adoptions in the state of FL. We paid $1200 for our sons and our daughters is going to be the same this Wednesday. I figured I did not want to do anymore paperwork for now. After reading this thread maybe I should have.
