Way OT - Outer Banks question about beaches?

This is very OT! Hubby and I are talking about another vacation in the Outer Banks this summer. Last year we stayed in Southern Shores. Loved it but the beach sand was, well....very brown and not very soft. We visited Duck and Corolla and some of the areas north (the towns - not the beaches) and were wondering if the sand was better up there?? We drove south to Hatteras Island area and the sand there was gorgeous - soft and white....but for some reason the sand in Southern Shores wasn't great, and we're big beach people and love nice sand Anyone out there from NC and know? We're starting to look at houses to rent and want to pick the best place. Thanks!

Isn't most of the sand on the Atlantic dark and hard? After spending year after year in Destin, we went to NC last summer and my children HATED the beach. In fact my youngest looked at me and said 'this isn't sand...it's too hard!'

I know some places bring in sand and I think might explain why it's fluffy and white...maybe someone knows a place in NC that has that kind of beach???

Yes! Further south - between Duck/Souther Shores and going into Hatteras Island....I drove to Frisco (2 hours south of Duck) to go horseback riding on the beach (I'm a horsey nut!) and the sand was very soft and white....but the problem is, it's very remote. Hatteras Island is very quiet and a little more low-key than we want. We definitely want a few grocery stores and restaurant options Otherwise we would stay down there.

My in-laws own and rent a beautiful house in OBX in Kill Devil Hills, right on the beach rode and less than 50 yards from the beach access. We usually go in October (I'm not a fan of hot, hot summers) and the beach/sand is very unpredictable that time of year. We went in August 2 years ago and the beach/sand was very nice. If you want more info PM me!

We go to Corolla every year and I've never had a problem with the sand...but then again I think 90% of the beaches I've visited have been Atlantic coast so maybe I'm just used to it.

Just wanted to pass this website on to you....
You'll find message board w/ the locals on the "fishtalk" link. I've posted there and got help w/ info on the area.

Avalon Pier- Streaming Piercam w/sound

I keep this link in my favs whenever I need a beach "fix" LOL check out the sunrise photos too! ahhhhhhh......cant wait for summer @ OBX!

We always stay within sight of Jockeys Ridge in Nags Head. I LOVE being able to stay in the older (1930's) cottages on the oceanfront.

If you love quiet beaches, and have time, go all the way thru Hatteras Village to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. Off to the left is a beachfront that we have found to always be very quiet, and great for shell collectng.

I have my OBC!! pfffffffft!
I missed her, I missed my siblings, I missed the connection, the identity, the ethnic background, the medical history..... I lost something very important in my life for 40 plus years. I am thankful to finally have all that back

Hi- I'm from NC. You won't find any Caribbean quality beaches in NC. However, your best bet is Bald Head Island, Cape Hatteras (Frisco is near there too) or Holden Beach. Any other beach questions feel free to PM.
