Okay, so our Int'l Adoption Dr. asked us to have Ava's HC rechecked...she thinks its a little low (which she said can mean she has a neurological problem). Anyone have any issues with this and everything turn out fine? Here's how the measurements went...

birth - 33cm
1 1/2 mo. - 36.5cm
2 1/2 mo. - 37cm
3 1/2 mo. - 38cm

She also questions the fact that she is fisted (with her thumb tucked) in a lot of the pictures. She was 3 1/2 months at the time of those pictures.

Hey, Jen. I don't know how much help it is, but I think it is pretty common for doctors to ask for re-measurements of head circumference. I've seen it several times and our doctor said something similar about our daughter at one month, but then her measurements were fine at 2. Hope all works out and you don't worry too much!

Well, if Avas is low, Noras is miniature. So far so good with her. Noras actually on the charts now. She was proportionately small.

Well, my daughter (now 4 years old and way too smart for her own good!) had a head circumference of 37 cm at 2 months old and 39 cm at 4 months old. Like ERAmy said, she is just proportionally small.

We have been having hc concerns as well.

At 3 months, our girl's hc was 37. We were able to measure it ourselves on our visit, because the doctor's report two weeks earlier was reporting 34.7. Yikes! The following month, two weeks after we measured, the doctor reported hc of 35. So we knew then not to trust those numbers 100%.

However we are still uneasy with her growth rates. She is now 8 months old, and her last medical (7.5 months)showed only .15 lb weight increase (12.15lbs) and hc is now only 39.7.

So, I know this doesn't help ease your own concerns, but at least know you are not alone in lower hc measurements!!

My DDs were smaller and she is just fine. I hope everything is ok with your baby. Some Guatemalan babies have very small HC but seem to be just fine. Anna

Our daughter grew very very slowly her first 6 months. Her head circum grew only 1 cm a month and I think one month it stayed the same. At 3 months her head circum was 36 cm. It was 33.5 at birth. When we picked her up at 6 months she was barely 11 lbs. She was like a tiny doll. She has gained weight and grown but she is still very small compared to American standards. Developmentally she is right on track.

If you are worried about the fist issue, I would ask about it specifically. It shouldn't be that hard for someone to observe whether or not she is opening her hand appropriately. At 3 months of age she should be able to grab and/or reach for something. They should be able to get that info for you. Its hard to get info sometimes but if its something you are worried about it be persistant. If your dr brought it up then its a question you should have answered. It should be easy to get that info.

Jenn when we got Zack's medical at 4 months his was 37cm. I know they have done one test to see if he was anemic which he is, and they are doing another test something about genetics/neurological. I mean he is small anyway at 4 months he was only lbs.

On "babygirl's" 4 month medical she weighed 11lbs HC was 39cm and length was 58cm.

Head circ, can be improperly measured each time by different people for one. My DD always had a small head. She still does at 5yrs. Anyhow, the docs were concerned and her fontanels closed really late. However, she is very smart. Many people think she is much older than she is because she can carry on a great conversation for being 5. Unless you feel she is not developing mentally or physically on target, then I would not worry about it!~

I went back and checked the medicals I have received and found the one from 4 months old. It says that her HC was 37 cm. and she has a big head!!!!!! Hope that helps!
