Question OT - Toddler Bed

Greetings everyone,

I am sitting here watching my almost 19-month old do everything in her power to NOT fall asleep in her crib. I am worried she is going to break her crib while she is at it!

I was wondering, at what age should a child transition to a toddler bed. Is 19 months too young? I certainly don't want to take this step too early. Any one going through this decision process at this time? Any help would be appreciated.

Ruthie

Angelena is almost 20 months, and we started the toddler bed about 3 weeks ago. She HATED the crib, loves to co-sleep, but we moved and started off with the toddler bed... She was really excited about it, until it was dark... But after a few try's and, assuring I was right there, she sleeps pretty well in it. Mind you it is in my room... BUt eventually it will be moved into her own room.

Good Luck... AND HAVE FUN!

I'm going through the same thing but my daughter is only 15 months old. DH and I have decided we are going to try to hold off on making the transition until she reaches 18 months. I have a friend who transitioned her daughter at 15 months to a toddler bed and at 20 months to a full size bed and never had an issue. I think at 18-20 months it should be ok. It will probably just tke lots of reassurance :-)

We decided to keep our daughter in her crib until she crawled out and she didn't do that until she was nearly 2 years old .....finally discovered it at 23 months! Lucky us! Her crib converted to a toddler bed but, she hates it and prefers her big girl (twin) bed. We put rails on it and she sleeps like a baby in it! No pun intended!

Best of luck!

Thanks everyone, for your input. The only thing scary about the transition is imagining what Liliana will be up to in her room. I could also see her wondering about the house if we don't shut her door. Yikes!

It sounds like it might be time to start looking into it though. Wish me luck!

Our pediatrician suggested at 18 months that we move him to a toddler bed or mattress on the floor. We want to wait as long as we can because the crib works for us.

My dd is 27 mos and still in a crib. She sleeps from 7:30 pm until 7:00 am. We are not planning to move her any time soon (like, if it's not broken, don't fix it, LOL). However, if she showed signs of climbing out, etc, I would look into it.

Good luck!

Amy

ps: My SIL has 6 kiddos and she is the one who encouraged me to keep the baby in the crib a little longer. My ped. suggests we make the move between 2 & 3 years old.

I have two 27 months old in cribs. They can climb in and out. You can also just put the rail down and put the matress on the lowest slot. Genrally they do not climb out in the morning but only at night and then they often climb in each others crib to help un zip and undress each other. They have sleepers on that are zipped on back wards to help slow down the undressing ceremony. If they are not visiting each other in the crib then they are ripping everything out of the closet and drawers. I have stripped down their bedroom to make sure they do not get into too big a trouble. Best wishes on the next up coming two yrs. LOL Anna

Our son, nearly 2 has had a toddler bed in his room for about 4 months. We talked it up as the "big boy bed", I got cool sheets to lure him in, but he just loves his crib, and will NOT sleep (or even lie down) in the toddler bed. Not even for naps. I really want him to transition before our daughter arrives because they will be sharing a room for awhile. I don't know how to do it gracefully! Any ideas?

I've also heard that once you move to a toddler bed, you can say goodbye to good naps. Is that true? Geeze, I hope not!

Wow. Is anyone able to comment on whether or not there is a correlation between less naps and transitioning to a toddler bed. If there is such a thing, Liliana is staying in her crib till she can't no more. LOL

No correlation here. Good nappers stayed good nappers and bad ones stayed bad nappers. Anna
