OT-need advice about crib/sleeping issues

It has been a long time since we've posted, but I could really use some help. Caleb (will turn 3 in April) has been having trouble settling down for nap. In the past he has just bounced on his bottom, but now he is standing with his back to the backside of the crib and bumping backwards into it. (along with somersaults, giggling, etc... it really is quite a show) Last night at bath I realized he has a nice round bruise at the base of his spine. He doesn't seem bothered by it because today he was bouncing against the crib back again. This bouncing only happens at nap.

I wasn't planning on transitioning out of the crib yet because he hasn't tried to get out yet. His mattress is pretty much shot from all of the bouncing. He even broke the metal spring base of the crib about a month ago.

My question to you all is do you think now is the time to get out the big bed? If so, should we take the crib out of the room and just put the twin mattress on the floor or should we wait and see how the big bed goes before taking down the crib?

Thanks for any help!!!

Sara

We only used a crib for part of the night prior to transitioning to a twin size bed. I would transition before the child starts climbing out, because that is a much farther fall. We co-slept most/part of the night and at naps, so we new our son would do well in a regular bed. We purchased a twin size bed and transistioned him when he was 27 months old. He sleeps much better and has only fallen out twice in the last 4 months. He LOVES his big boy bed! If you are concerned about him falling out....you could put it on the floor instead of on a bed frame. Our son's bed is higher than ours, yet he still does fine.
