This is the headline on today's Chicago Tribune,
I will post the link as soon as I can. It does tell both sides, however the headline still stings. "Latin nation tries to fight image as baby factory for the US". Mary Refer to chicagotrubune.com homepage Last edited by Mary Mulcahy : 11-11-2007 at 07:39 AM. |

Mary,
There is a copyright on that article that prohibits it being posted in its entirety, here on the forums. You're welcome to place the link in a reply and direct members to the Trib's website...

What this article misses is the reason most women relinquish their children. I think that it is misleading in that it makes it seem that most relinquishments are because the bmom gets paid.

I also found that reason for an adoption plan was not discussed. As for one birthmother placing several children, basically there is little birthcontrol in Guatemala for women without health care. THey lack options.
I really hate it when they talk about the Marriott as the baby hotel. In China, most families stay at one hotel and the children are photographed on a particular love seat, yet I don't hear folks calling that hotel the baby hotel! I did like that the author mentioned several others who are working in adoptions (I cannot say their names since they are working in Guatemalan adotions) but it is truly not one sided. Sorry about the link, here is the one to the front page Chicago news, sports, photos, video, blogs, Chicago weather, business, travel, tourism, entertainment and jobs -- chicagotribune.com -- chicagotribune.com Since I live in Chicago, I will be dealing with this article from freinds and peers. zIt is right on the front page in all of its glory, ..... Hi Mary, (we are also in Chicago) and I just read this in the newspaper (as a family member emailed me about it). I personally thought the writer did a poor job of focusing on the positives that come from a Guatemalan adoption. They failed to mention that adopted children will get 3 full meals every day, an opportunity at education as well as clothes and a roof over their head. All are not so lucky. After living in Guatemala for 5 mos (fostering) I personally saw the corruption and the lawyers who only cared about financial gain -- BUT I also saw the children who were forced to wk at young ages, the ones who were begging for food, and the ones who had to squat on the sidewalk to use the bathroom becuase they didn't have a home or a restroom to use. As I looked at my sweet guat girls sitting here in my living room, I couldn't help but tear up and feel so thankful that the Guatemalan government allowed me to bring these children into my home and into my life. I am praying for all those families who still wait for their precious child to come home!
