Experienced Moms Please Help

I know you moms will help me with this. How many times does a child poo- poo a day. When we brought Mia home she was going 1-2 times a day. Now she seems to be going 3-4 times a day. It is not diarrhea, but mushy. She is almost 1 year old and does not have any teeth yet. I have been trying to give her more solid foods like stage 3 gerber. ( a little chunkier). I give her mashed bananas and she just started eating some cheerios yesterday. She has been on whole milk for about a month now. What can it be? Oh! She also loves mashed potatoes, yougurt and fruits. She was on an antibiotic (Zithromax) for an ear infection, her last dose was yesterday. She is still pooping 4 times today. Please help

Probably it's the antibiotics. Zithromax is notorious for causing stomach upset. Yogurt and/or probiotic supplement can help.

It's most likely the Zithromax.

Shay goes a lot too. Atleast twice a day and sometimes more. Much more than any of my bio. kids went. Also, your daughter is overdue for teeth, so she may be teething which will cause frequent and soft stools.

Cheese is great for stopping kids up. I would give her some shredded cheese. She'll probably love it. Shay is CRAZY about cheese. He could eat it all day. (I give Shay 100 percent fruit juice and that's how I keep Shay from getting stopped up from the cheese.)

Heart Basic knobs to adjust these issues :)

When it's too soft:
Bananas, rice, applesauce (not juice), toast, cheese, pears

When it's not soft enough:
apple juice, eliminate white fruits

When she's on antibiotics:
yogurt

The funny thing is....I too worried about this many moons ago with our son. I even called the nurse and asked. She kind of giggled and said only to worry if they are not using the bathroom. Going to the bathroom is a Good thing. It just means she's eating more.

It can also be the whole milk. We had this problem when we switched to whole milk. Doctor said to mix whole milk with formula for a while to ease the transition. Llittle by little use less formula until it's all milk. At 14 months we are still using 1/3 formula to 2/3 whole milk, we tried to stop the formula but ran into the same problem. Doc says she just needs more time for her system to get used to it.

All of the things you mentioned can add to bowl movements, antibiotics, teething and whole milk. I am actually surprised with all that going on she doesn't have diarhea. Also some children have more frequent or soft bowl movements then others. Anna

It's probably the meds. I wouldn't worry too much. I would give anything for that amount of poops per day. LOL. Mikayla poops all day long....sometimes up to 8 times a day!!!!!! It's the INH she is on I think for her + TB test...sigh....I am sick of poop here!

hmm

it could be the meds (this happened with us) and could be milk too....

However, some kids are just bigger poopers than others. Addison pooped 4-5 times a day when I first brought her home and I had the same concerns. As it turned out, it was just "her" and now she's 3 years old, regular as clockwork. So, don't stress yourself out so much over this unless you find a good cause.

I agree with Jen. Our Savannah was the same way as Addision, however, our Karrey had a VERY hard time going at all and now, more than 3 years later they are both very regular with no problems.!!
Hope this helps.

Blessings

It probably is the meds. We went thru a week long bout of unexplained and frequent pooping. The doctor told us to go to Wild Oats...or another health food store...and get a product called or similar to Essential Enzymes. She said even if they are not ill that giving them a cup of juice daily will help to manage loose poop and any constipation. When the enzymes in our body are all out of whack the poop is the first thing to be effected. I was skeptical, but in a matter of a day and a half we had normal poop.

I thought about this too! We did transition her to whole milk. It took 6 weeks. 2 weeks of 1/4 milk, 3/4 formula. Then 1/2 & 1/2 for 2 weeks etc... wonder if she still is not tolerating the whole milk yet? Thank you for all of your input.

Well, first I'd cut out the Cheerio's, some of the fruit and mashed potatoes! All have lots of Fiber - yes, even the Cheerio's. I don't think it's uncommon for a child to go 3 or 4 times per day. Their poops will change ALOT as they grow up. Our son had "toddler diarrhea" (mushy poop - not really diarrhea) for months. I remember the doc calling it "toddler diarrhea" - perfectly normal. If you are really concerned, cut out the higher fiber foods and give her bananas and rice to bind her up more. Good luck!

We've had so many loose stools since dd came home and retesting for parasites a million times.

We're now going to a g.i. specialist...Probalby my paranoia but yet it's made me anxiious.

btw, our problems really started when we switched dd to whole milk. She is now off the milk but still has the issues.

Best of luck,
