Swing/jumperoo, etc for older babies

I posted a question about a swing for my 8 month old son and appreciated some responses that I had not considered - i.e. that he may be bored with the swing since he is mobile now (crawling, pulling up, etc).

I'm looking for something to keep my son content for 15-20 minutes while I put my older son to bed. I was hoping a swing would do it, but now think I should consider something different. He's not crazy about an exersaucer, so I thought something with motion would do the trick.

So, I thought I'd ask the experts here... Does anyone have an older baby (8+ months) that likes a swing? Are there any other products we should consider?

Thanks!

Hi. I don't have any good ideas for you. But I just thought I would share this with you -- I was already to bring a johny jump up to Guatemala to leave with foster mom and my chiroprator told me they are not good for babies as they compress the spine. I am bring my DS home soon and I am hoping he will sit in the exersaucer while I shower, etc. Hope you get some good advice.

Boy, that's a good question! I wish they made baby swings that went up to about 35 pounds! We brought our ds home at 16 months, the most active age possible, with no great solutions that I know of to occupy him and keep him safe (other than Mom and Dad watching him). I still put him in his crib or a pack and play as a last resort if I need to get a shower.

I don't worry too much if I'm just headed to the bathroom because he bangs on the door, cries, and tries to stick his fingers through the door. I know exactly where he is!

Good luck! I'd be so happy if other people had better suggestions!

My sister lent us a travel swing when Maya came home it converts into a toddler seat/swing. It's wonderful. Maya still will sit in it and play with the toys above her head (she's 11 months and weighs 25#). Now I have to add that it won't swing well with her weight but it occupies her if we need it for showering/bathing time for us. It has a latch that stops the swinging to be a toddler seat and if I remember it goes up to 35#. I looked on Babies R Us on-line and didn't find it though. It was bought 3 years ago made by Fisher Price. I will keep looking and if I find a link/picture I will send it to you.

Not meant to start a debate

sb123,

Well, I hope this doesn't cause a rucus--. I was always one of the people who said, "I won't let me child watch televison."--at least until I had a child. Then I found, try as I might, that there were simply those occasions where I needed 15 minutes (her attention span at the time was about 5 min.) to get something done, and needed my daughter stationary. One day my very good friend's husband brought over a gift for us--a video by Baby Einstein called Farm Animals. He gave it to my husband and said "Jane" (his wife) would never admit it, but that she sometimes popped in this video for their child to watch and their son loved it. As it turned out, it was perfect, and eventually we even bought a few more. They are not cartoons, they are puppet shows or toys or photos of animals, relatively educational, set to classical music and the children seem mesmerized by them. They are only about 15-20 minutes long (perfect for prepping a meal, or doing dishes), and what I really like about them was that they were calming. They did not get my daughter all wound up. Usually my daughter would sit in her jumparoo, kick-and-play or a pallate on the floor to watch.

I found it interesting that my friend could not admit that she had to sometimes use it, that would have been helpful to me. Therefore, I am always quick to tell people that, yes, I needed help, and, yes, I occasionally relied upon the television for that help. Good luck.

We got my son the jumperoo when he was that age and he went crazy for it! My SIL is a pediatrician and said that she doesn't like the doorway ones (she's seen head injuries from kids flying out of control) but the jumperoo that is it's own unit is wonderful and safe. She said it's great for strengthening their legs.

When I needed a break, I'd put on the signing time videos (the only ones that would keep my son's attention for a few minutes) and put him in the jumperoo and he was happy for a good 10 minutes (which for my son is a long time )

My son didn't like the jumperoo until that age range. (He didn't walk until just after his first birthday, so he had a good four months of jumping.)

all FOUR of my tiny tots LOVED and I mean L-O-V-E-D the jumperoo!! Each of them bounced until they got so strong they could move the whole unit and then we took it away. Our youngest, Lileigh, will be 7 months tomorrow and will jump and play until she falls asleep jumping!!! It is AWESOME!!!!!!

Hope this helps!

Blessings

Love the jumperoo

Our daughter is 8 months old and she LOVES the jumperoo! With that said, she will only nap in my arms or the swing. She has the Fisher Price aquarium swing and seems to like the music and the "aquarium" above her head. She is not able to get out of the swing and she is very strong from all the jumping.
