Anyone with a skinny 18 month old who doesn't eat well?

Kate weighs 22 lbs. the girl has only gained 2 lbs. since she came home almost 5 months ago!!
The pediatrician is not worried at all.
I guess he knows more than me, but I am her mama so I am entitled to worry.
She eats "good" every few days.
LOVES spaghetti and fruit and that is about it.
i am giving her only 2-4 ounces of milk in her bottle 3x a day. The rest of the time she drinks water, juice or more milk. She doesn't drink much either. Just sips here and there.
I am thinking of giving her Pediasure.
Do you all think that is drastic?
I offer her food all of the time. I am stressing over this. She is getting taller though - her 12 month sleepers are short at the wrist and ankles. ha ha
She is 32 inches tall now.
Besides the eating issue she is beautiful, smart and loving. A total angel.
Her birthmom is thin so maybe her body structure is just going to be different than ours.
We are big so I compare her to our son and my neice at her age but I guess that is not equal comparison.

Any advice?

Not Much Advice here....but I am in the same Boat as you are with your baby girl.Maya (our daughter) is 19 months and FINALLY hit 20 pounds. She came home at 8 months old.She is just not that Interested in eating, she rather run and play.....It is very hard for her to STOP and take time to eat.Our doctor is not worried about it either, but I sometimes Worry about it.She will eat fruit, she just Loves it and she loves to drink her milk, but that's really about it.Hang in there and I am sure she will be O.K.!!!I did start her on a vitamin once a day every other day so she could get her vitamins!!

My daughter was 22.5 lbs at 18 months old and is still only 29 lbs at going on 4 years old. (4 in December) She is amazingly strong, and very smart. She is just tiny. Small but mighty as we say!

Keep offering her quality foods without empty calories to make sure she is getting the nutrition she needs, and try not to worry!

We have a 19 month old boy who is exactly the same. Has barely gained any weight since he came home in November (maybe 4 lbs), weighs around 22 lbs and about the same length (can't remember exactly). Doesn't like to take too much time to eat, and only eats well occasionally - he's so active he burns everything off even when he does eat well! I wouldn't worry - as long as she's gaining and steadily going up the growth chart that's all that matters. Hispanics are generally smaller anyway. I do give him pediasure on occasion for a snack - he loves them but doesn't seem to make a difference in his weight - but he doesn't get them that often. He's been off the bottle though for quite a few months (gave it up on his own.)

Good luck!

My daughter is 18 months old and 21 1/2 pounds. The doctor isn't worried about her, so I am not. On the U.S. chart she is 15th percentile for weight and 50th for height.

I think our kids are just petite.

My Gabi is pretty much the same. Now at almost 25 months about 32 1/2" and 24lb. I have bio kids that were much skinnier at that time. Is she active and healthy? Anna

Hi

Here's a couple of other benchmarks:

My twin girls who turned 4 years old in July are now 27 pounds and my 7 year old weighs 46 pounds. They are all small for their peer group but other than being small, everything is perfectly normal. I get 27 pounds of back sass (x2) when they don't want to do something and my 7 year old is the fastest girl sprinter in her school and even beat all the 5th graders. She's quite proud of that.

Yes, Kate is strong, healthy, active, etc.
The doctor and the social worker are just amazed by her.
She could live on milk and fruit.
I think I am going to start a vitamin.
Thanks for the advice mommies!

Our Dr. advised to add fat into the diet, like butter on bread, butter on veggies etc.

We are also having weight gain issues combined with 4-5 loose stools daily. Sounds different than your situation.

We are currently in the process of:

1. retesting for parasites
2. Trying out elimination of different foods
3. getting referred to a gastrointerologist

best wishes,

We are in the same boat. She is 17months and 22lbs. Our doc at first put Aly on a high fat diet also and also pediasure. She still did not gain like the doc wanted to. The doc is happy and not worried at all anymore. She is a very happy and healthy little girl.

Tati just had her 15 month check up and weighs 22 lbs 12 oz, 31 1/2 inches tall. I was suprised because she actually lost 3 oz since her 1 year check up but grew 1 3/4 inches! She has been home for 6 months now and has gained less than 3 lbs in that time. Her eating habits have changed too. She is on whole milk but it is a struggle to get her to drink enough of that from a sippy cup. She also LOVES fruit but will only eat a few bites of anything else. It must be a phase that kids go through at this age. Tati's ped isn't too worried, she just wants her to go in to be weighed in a couple of months to see is she has gained. She is very healthy otherwise so I try not to worry.

If Kate is healthy and active then she might just be ready for a growth spurt. Best of luck to you!

Kassie is 18.5 months old and is 21lbs but only 28.5 inches long..... We were referred to a nutritionist that had me document what she was eating for a while. We eventually decided that she was eating just fine, and it was just genetics that made her tiny not her diet. We did pediasure for a while and all it did was make her diarrhea worse.

I looked at this board and saw plenty of other kids the same size as Kassie and it really reassured me.

Our daughter is 15 mo. & 18 lbs.

She only likes bottles. I have no luck at all when I try to introduce food. She eats a few bites & then wants down. Her Dr. isn't worried either. I'm not too worried, but it is frustrating!
