What does your 10 month old eat?

Hi Everyone!
Our pediatrician advised us that we can start feeding our daughter table food. I am SO nervous about this.
I really didn't get a chance to talk to him in depth about it because Lily was screaming her head off and I just wanted to get out of there and console her.
So, I am looking for suggestions.
Also, is your child drinking anything other than formula or water?

thanks!!!

There is a great book - Super Baby Food. Some of the info i passed over but there is a part that lists, for each month beyone 6 months, what is "safe" to feed your child (i.e., wait on nuts, berries until 1 year etc). Our 9 month old eats only table food. She wont eat baby food! She loves lunch meat turkey, yogurt, acorn squash, pieces of very soft carrot, mashed potatoes, tiny pieces of cheese - pretty much anything she can pick up and feed herself.

Try not to worry! Make sure the items arent choking size and look into what foods to avoid until her system is old enough to handle them.

HOpe that helps! PM if you want.

Our dd is a little over a yr old. Our ped. said, "go ahead and take her off formula and put her on whole milk and table food." I said, "she only has 2 teeth." well anyway she said to cut things up small.

I would start on baby food if you haven't already.

I cut the food up really small and only feed her a few small pieces at a time. It takes forever to feed her. I always watch her while she is eating. You can start out with something mushy like bananas or you can mash it up to make it easier. Start slow and keep it slow so she doesn't choke. I can tell you she will likely choke a few times so be prepared to swipe her mouth out. Ok I hope I haven't freaked you out too much. Also if she has more than 2 teeth then I will suspect you will be a lot more sucessful than I am : ) because she can chew!

Good luck.

Actually...she has NO teeth yet. So, I'm guessing that she can't have what most 10 month old babies can have.
She is on baby food right now, but I honestly think she is getting bored with it.

One of the first table foods we gave Maya was sweet potatoes. We would bake them until almost mushy and then mash and add a tiny bit of butter or margarine. She LOVED them (yes, past tense ... she won't touch them now!) And she loved mashed bananas. And then we tried grits. The girl loved grits so much she had them for breakfast every day for almost a year.

I also recommend finding baby food books at the library... I still get great ideas for Maya's meals and snacks from those.

OH NO no teeth!!! You can do little (I mean little) pieces of chicken, cheese, noodles, cooked carrots, cantaloupe, watermelon, plums, pears, and mashed potatoes. Sometimes I mash the fruit up so it isn't little pieces, but almost like mush. My dd LOVES soup, spaghetti, pizza, and anything with gravy!

I am sure you will get some better suggestions.

We brought our dd home at 9.5 months on table food

And she only had 2 teeth. The trick was she didn't chew at all instead she mashed it around with her tongue and gums. I would feed her anything(except the forbiddens like peanut butter, chocolate, etc) that you could over-cook to the point of mashing it easily with a fork. If you think about we don't CHEW a lot of things either. We bite it to make it smaller then most things get mashed by our tongue and the roof of our mouths or dissolve in saliva. Just watch her closely. Most kids aren't on baby food much past 1 year and most babies only have a few front teeth then anyway, which are for biting and cutting not chewing. One thing I would be leary of is lettuce. The FM swore he ate it at 9 months - I waited til this summer and she is 2.

Good Luck

Jen, I just started given Devon a little more table food this week. She was really gaggy on anything that wasn't baby food. She likes cooked carrots, cooked green beans, cherios, gold fish crackers, cooked potatoes. I haven't given her any meat yet. Maybe next week.

this topic is near and dear to my heart. julian is 1, just getting hints of anything more than those two bottom middle teeth (the pointy ones on top are starting to come in next, that should be a hoot...)

anyway, i am so nervous about chunks of food. i know i need to branch out more though. today at dinner i gave him a few pieces of pork and some black beans. we're waiting for grains for a while because we know julian is allergic to rice.

anything mushy though is great...

i am looking forward to more ideas.

This kid will eat ANYTHING ... nailed down or otherwise LOL

His absolute favorite is bananas. I cut a slice and cut it in half. When I started, I cut it in quarters. Watermelon is good, so are potatoes (sweet or not). Usually I mash potatoes up, haven't given him many chunks yet, but will begin that over the next week. He also loves avacados. Nice thing is that if you mash it with a fork, most is mush, but there are chunks so they start to learn to gum or chew. He started eating more solid food with only two small teeth, mostly he gums it

You can feed your kid anything - I mean anything - you can chop into little pieces and they will probably love it. No nuts, shellfish, or eggs until later but other than that, go for it. Food is another way to explore the world and the more diversity, the more stimulation that your child's brain is getting. Our daughter loves pickles, sauerkraut, curry (not really hot curry though), Thai food, Indian food, ice cream, you name it. Try everything with them.

Teeth curiosity

Does anyone have any clue why so many of our little guatlings seem to be late in the teething department? My daughter didn't get any teeth until after her first birthday and at 16 months, still has only 4.
I total know how you are feeling. Extended family members kept trying to feed her things and I kept freaking out because she had no teeth. I have just taken it slow and cut everything up really small.

Well, our 11 month old DS has had 8 teeth for months now....I think he had them at 6 or 7 months of age, actually. Surprised the heck out of me, his sister, who was born in Guat, didn't sprout tooth #1 until 9 months.

We feed DS anything...he loves cottage cheese, soft veggies (even broccoli), pretzels, little chunks of cheese and meats, noodles, eggs (yes, we give them to him periodically even though they say you shouldn't, and he's been just fine). The more we give him table food the more he loves it. A month ago I was mashing up canned veggies to give to him. Now I can usually give him the same veggies and food we're having, as long as it's all soft enough. Bananas is another favorite with him, as are peaches, grapes, applesauce and pears. Cheerios, fruit puffs and other Gerber treats are favorites of his too.

Two months ago he gagged on any kind of table food. The littlest bit of bread choked him. Then we found out from our International Adoption doctor that kids can't do table food, or even much solids, until they're sitting up well on their own. Well, DS wasn't doing all that well in the sitting department two months ago when we picked him up. And he had the eight teeth....so, maybe being able to do table foods doesn't have as much to do with having teeth as having balance. I'd just start off slow and see where it takes you!

Tina

I don't know, but my dd only has 2 teeth and is a little over 12 months! I feel your pain because my family is always trying to feed her BIG chunks of things and I swipe it out of her mouth and think I am over protective. Maybe I am, but I have seen her choking on smaller things. I don't know, but I wish she would grow some darn teeth!!! Also glad to see I am not alone.

Our son is 10 months old, has NO teeth and eats ANYTHING. I have never seen anything like it. He has gained 2.3 pounds in 3 weeks. He was obviously fed lots of table food by his foster family as he gets upset if you don't let him do it himself. As others have said, we cut everything in tiny bites (no bigger than the size of a pea) and let him go to town. He particularly loves fruits, veggies, turkey, etc. Mushy and slippery foods are your friends.

It is so interesting because our Sam, our 16 month old son, was the exact opposite. We had to take major "baby steps" or gag, gag, gag.

I went to the dentist yesterday and asked about Luke's teeth, or lack thereof. He said not to worry at all and that it is better for them to come in later rather than earlier. HTH!
