Was just reading a blog that I follow of a couple at the Marriott right now on PU trip. She said Anderson Cooper's "people" were there interviewing and filming and that they will be airing a series on Guatemalan Adoption next week. Her family was filmed for it but I don't think they spoke...just footage. She was unaware of the DOS statement yesterday but she said that something must have happened because the mood at the Marriott has changed. I just wanted to let everyone know as I am sure we will ALL want to watch that CNN segment next week. I have no idea when it will be on...sorry.

We should start e-mailing AC360 to ensure that he doesn't do a negative story, my fear is that this could be a case of lazy journalism like the NPR story. Send a team down to Guatemala and film for an hour, copy some of the NPR story and contact a hostile in UNICEF. Voila we have ratings and bias and sensationalism.

MB, I heard this too. Right now I am about to burst into tears because I mentioned it to a friend tonight and she referred to my daughter's birth country as a "baby farm". I am sick to my stomach. I WILL be calling Anderson tomorrow. This BS needs to STOP!

Heaven help us. I scan the international papers daily on Google and there isn't a day that goes by that there isn't a Guatemalan adoption story about baby snatching, greedy Americans, etc. It's particularly rampant in the British papers. Given the current climate, this is so not needed right now....As a journalist, I really want to smack these reporters.

Kathy - is it another segment that is going to make us out to be the "bad guys?" My heart just sinks when I see the negative reporting.

We have to get the REAL story out there. People need to know the time, effort, love and yes money that goes into the NORMAL Guatemalan adoption. Of course there are bad situations just as here not everyone does what is right and or legal in every case. I contend that most adoptions are just like ours. We did it twice and NEVER did I feel like we just "bought" a baby. It was never easy!

I have heard that AC360 is planning a spot on Guatemala adoptions. I do enjoy the quality and balance that CNN brings to journalism and fervently hope that this segment will hold true to this. Recently, most 'journalism' (if one can call it that) done on Guatemalan adoptions have presented only one side of the issue, the negative side. Like any country in the world, Guatemala does need improvement in their adoption system and occasionally corruption invades the system. However, I feel most other stories have not reported the positive side, that the majority of adoptions are completely legal, and the adoptive parents are loving, caring people who just want to bring their children home. I hope that CNN will report on the many scrutinies to which adoptive parents are subjected in the adoption process and provide a more balanced view of Guatemalan adoptions. I look forward to the segment.

As much as I like watching AC360, I can't say that Anderson has mastered the art of balanced journalism. Like most other new shows, it more often seems about sensationalism and attention grabbers than it does about presenting the viewer with an accurate perspective of a situation. I don't have a good feeling that the Guat adoption story will be any different...i will write them though and ask them to present evidence and facts when talking about any problems/corruption, rather than sensational soundbites.

Here is contact information for a couple of producers who have input on show content. Now is the time to act -- before the show airs! Public officials pay attention to what they hear/read in the media. This is a great opportunity. Email is the best way to reach out to these producers. The story that has not been told is what will happen to the children if adoptions are stopped. This is an angle that has not been covered in the media.
