OT: Probs with no SS# for daughter re: unemployment
Okay, this is a long shot here. I am hoping that of the hundreds of people on this board, perhaps someone has run into this issue or heard of someone who has.
My husband lost his job last week. This is obviously an issue, but even more so since I am a stay at home mom. He of course started right away in looking for a job, he is doing as much as possible. However, we need something in the form of money at least for food, so he called today about unemployment, and they won't let him file his claim because our daughter doesn't have a social security number. We are still awaiting our COC and I am of the understanding that she can't get a social security number until that is done. We JUST got her new birth certificate on Friday from the re-adoption, so even if I hustle to pull together all docs needed on this N-600 (which is so confusing in and of itself that if anyone can help me with that one please PM me) there is no way we will even be in line for the COC until the end of this week, and I'm betting that takes a while (we're in Kentucky). Has anyone else run into this? They will let him file not listing our daugher as a dependent, but that means he will receive less money and we do have to put food on the table for her too! Or, is there any way to get her SS number without the COC? Any help is much appreciated. -Meredith

First, I am so sorry about your husband's job!
You absolutely do not need a COC to get a social security number. You could have gotten a number for her the day she came home if you would have liked, regardless of visa type. Until you show SS the COC, she will be listed as a legal resident, not a citizen, but you can always go back and change that later. Let me do a quick search and I will find the thread with everything you need to know. Good luck! Edited to add: Here is the thread. Getting a SSN Scroll down to post #7 by Sak9645, and it will tell you everything you need to know. Also, feel free to PM me with your questions about the N600 and I can walk you through it.

You do not need the COC for SS#. They tried to tell me this before too and it is false. Luckily I had my friends here to set me straight.
My son had a SS# and we don't have his COC. He came home a year ago and right after the readoption we took all the paperwork into the SS office and got him a SS#. I too about 2 weeks to receive his card cause they have to make sure the paperwork is authentic but other than that it went smoothly. Don't let them tell you otherwise. When you receive the COC simply take it in and they will change the status on the SS#. Good Luck and get to that SS office.

I am not sure about the SS. Have you tried and bring her passport and show the visa entry stamp? I was able to get a SS for my DD but she was from the Pacific islands. Also for extra food, baby items and sometimes cash certain churches will help out irregardless if you are a member with them or religious for that matter. It might not be enough but can help especially if you can't get the SS worked out soon. I hope your DH will find some work that suits him and pays more then the bills soon. Hugs, Anna

First, I'm sorry about your DH's job. Sending a big hug your way!!
2nd--We did not need a COC for our son's SSN. In fact, I had his SSN almost 2 yrs before we rec'd his COC! I can't think of any reasons why state factors would be contributors since these are both federally issued--so I would think it would be the same for you all, too.

I am sorry about your husband's job. I hope he gets a new, even better job soon.
In the meantime, I am echoing others. All we needed to get Sam's SS card was the protocolo and the stamped visa. **Print and bring with you the instructions from the SS website Dpline mentioned, as our office had no clue.** It took 5 minutes. As far as the COC - what will happen is that your daughter will be listed as a "permanent resident" or something similar and then when you DO get the COC, you bring it back in and they change her status to "citizen." That is what they told me anyway. Good luck.

Thank You!!
Wow, thank you all so very much. I am now in the process of collecting the relevant documents to take with me, and as soon as my sweet pea wakes up from her nap I'm going to whisk her down to our local SS office. Here's hoping the wait isn't too long. :-) A special thanks to Debbie for including that specific link with all of that information. And honestly, thank you all for your support and kind words, including e-hugs! This may sound silly, but it's amazing how much a little bit of kindness, even electronic kindness, can help. It was just what I needed to make me feel a little better. Seriously, thank you so much for that.
-Meredith PS: Debbie, I will definitely be PMing you as soon as I get through this SS thing to ask some questions about the N-600. Thank you!
