Hi everyone! It has been awhile since I've written as I've been busy getting little guy on a schedule, etc. The attachment process has been slow but steady and now 8 weeks later he is doing great! He loves his mommy and daddy!
However, 10 days ago he started having diarrea and hasn't stopped. He was admitted to the hospital and they've checked for parasites and everything else known to man to no avail. He has lost 30% of his body weight and we are worried sick. The doctor's don't seem to be too worried as we are getting enough fluid into him to sustain him so far but the moment he drinks or eats anything it starts up again. It is green and like water (sorry for those of you eating right now!) We could really use some feedback if anyone brought their little one home to have them have tummy problems. What was it? Any clue? Thanks so much!

it sounds like a kind of virus... Try using Sambucol..it is an elderberry extract that kills virus's.. I gave it to ours when he had it when we went for pickup and it only lasted a few days..
You may also want to give him some pedialyte for his replenishment.. Call me if you need anything..pm me... Coachmom.

Take your son to the emergency room immediately. Get a new doctor- a baby that had diarrhea for 10 days and has lost 30% of his body weight is seriously sick. Demand that they listen to you and help you determine what is going on.
Edit- ok, I see that he is in the hospital I read your post too fast. I would demand that an einfectous disease specialist and an International Adoption specialist be brought in to help evaluate what is going on. I am pryaing for his recovery. Love to you,

Sounds like roto virus. My son had that as a baby. He had to be hospitalized. It took them a while to figure it out.

Yes, I would try the Pedialyte too....but I'm sure if he's in the hospital he is probably hooked up to IVs.
Please keep us posted. I'll be praying for your little boy! Hang in there....

Ok this may be WAY off base, but when we got home with dd she had SEVERE diaherrea for almost a week, but she didn't loose a lot of weight. We found that we were using tap water and we should have been using distilled water. The bacteria from our water affected her the same way it would affect us if we drank their water.
Also I assume that you have him on formula we used Similac Isomil DF (it is hard to find and only comes in liquid) and dd's stool hardened in a couple of days. We found the formula at Rite Aid and Walgreens. Maybe try switching him over to that. Other than that I don't know, but I keep us posted. We will be praying for him.

I don't know what is causing the problem, but please, please, please read this...Go home and boil some rice until it is mush, then drain the water out, cool the WATER from the rice to room temperature and take it to the hospital and feed it to your son. This happened to our DS shortly after he came home and we didn't know what to do and neither did his ped. Our ped. contacted an IA specialist who told him that in third world countries this rice "water" method was often used as formula when there was not enough forumula available and no wet nurse. We put our son on the rice water and the diarrhea stopped immediately. We used the rice water to slowly transition him back onto the SOY formula instead of milk based and the problem was solved. I don't know that this will work for your son and I will definitely pray for him, but PLEASE try this. It won't hurt him and it might actually do for him what it did for our little man.
Blessings

UGH...about two months after Kayla came home she had Rotavirus and it was one of the roughest things I have EVER been through in my life when it comes to sick kids. I swear my whole house smelled like it she was "going" so much. Every time she did it was a complete blowout. We were changing her and the sheets up to three times a night. I would lay her down and have all the sleepers, diapers, towels, and sheets ready to go for the night. She was in the hospital once for it. SHe was totally miserable. She could ONLY eat applesauce for three weeks afterwards as her stomach tried to re-adjust to the trauma. I know it's not the same but she was so sick and it was awful. So I can relate on that front. And...there was NOTHING that could be done to help her. Doctors said NO FORMULA because it makes it worse and it does. She drank water and pedialyte until she started coming around. It was BAAAAD. I know how tough it is when they are sick and there is nothing you can do or the doctors can do to help. Hang in there...it will get better. With Kayla it lasted about 1.5 weeks of total blowouts and then slowly started getting more solid.
Hugs to you!

No real advice here. Just know that I'm praying for you. Our middle son (bio) had something similar at 14 months. We were referred to a pediatric gastroenterologist. They ran all kinds of tests - upper GI, upper endoscopy, blood draws, etc. checking for cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, parasites and all sorts of other things. They never found anything and it mysteriously went away after about 2 months, thank the Lord. It was the scariest time as a mother that I have ever had, so my heart hurts with you.
Please keep us informed as to what is going on with him.

Is he in a pediatric hospital? If not, you may consider changing. Pray he gets well soon!

Yes...
He was in the hospital for 2 days and they released him. He was in a peds unit and I was amazed at how little they really knew! We have him on plain rice cereal made with unflavored pedialyte (he won't drink the flavored). They've taken away his formula (even the special kind Alimentum which is pre digested). He is looking freakishly little and it is really scaring us. I'm praying that it is just a virus and that we can push through this. My work is furious that I'm taking so much time off (a week as of Wed) but I don't care. I'm not going back until he starts to turn around.

Cryptosporidiosis (crypto) was what my daughter was tested for after having 5 days of diarrhea/vomiting. It is a waterborne disease and causes :
Dehydration Weight loss Stomach cramps or pain Fever Nausea Vomiting The doctor decided to test(stool sample) her for it after we told him the only thing different in her routine was a trip to the city pool. He said it is one of the viruses that chlorine doesn't kill in the pool and little people might not not have a good enough immune system to fight off the infection like other people. She tested negative, although I still wonder, but since then there has been an outbreak in Iowa where we live. Just a thought. Good luck and I'll keep you in my prayers. Jen

I have Celiac disease. That's a malabsorption syndrome. Have your doctor check for that. Many folks with constant diarrhea have Celiac. Hope your child feels better soon!
