Potty Training help please

Asking help from the experts... My 2 1/2 year old daughter has been potty training for a couple of months. She is great at daycare. Consistanly dry and uses the potty and has been doing this for over a month. I am thrilled about this...Now here is the problem-Once she isn't at daycare she doesn't want to use the potty. She won't let me put her on and I know that she needs to go. Shortly after I try to put her on the potty she will pee in her pants. This can happen multiple times... Any suggestions??? I am not sure what to do.

Thanks,
Lisa

Hmmm..that's really interesting! Do you have the same set up that they do at daycare? Same type of seat, potty etc..? Have you asked them specifics on how they go about the process..maybe they set a timer or everyone goes at the same "potty break" time. ??? It could be that she's doing it at home for attention or shes more comfortable at home and doesn't feel the need to please as much as she does for the day care workers..These are all just ideas thrown out there. I'm not sure what to think of it....good luck! At any rate..she'll find her way soon enough!

I agree that I would try to find out exactly what the 'procedure' is at daycare, but sounds like a control thing to me. Most would probably disagree with me, but I would just not make a big deal out of it and just be very matter of fact about cleaning up when she does have an 'accident.' She will eventually use the potty at home.

Good luck!

I would ask how they go about it at daycare. Also, are you "asking" her or just telling her, "Time to go potty now." while walking her to the potty? With some kids, you can't ask or they say no because they have that option. If those 2 things don't work, then I wouldn't push it. I would put a diaper/pull-up on her at home and tell her when she is ready, she can let you know. You might be surprised at how fast that "tactic" works.

Not sure I will be much help because my DD was the opposite. She was potty trained @ home b4 she was @ daycare. I had her class changed and she went to big girl panties after the 2nd day in the new class room and never looked back.

But here are a couple of thoughts? You may already be doing?

Let DD pick out some special panties. My DD loved "ELMO" @ the time so that is the panties she got. She did not want to mess up Elmo panties. We only had the one 4 pack so if she did (rare) but I would put on regular panties until Mommy washed those! The horror of it!

My DD LOVES LOVES LOVES books so I had a basket of books in the potty and would read to her when she went to the bathroom. I think sometimes she would go just so I would read to her. We also had bubbles to blow. "Stinkies" can take a little longer so I wanted to make sure we had entertainment to keep her there until done.

Also when we converted to "panties" 24/7 we did it on a weekend that we would be home mostly and went to the potty every 30 min. I drank lots of water myself and I would go to. If she said she did not have to go then I would say come with me please cause Mommy has to go and she would normally try too.

Use lots of "praise" for potty time. And just handle accidents calmly.

I also responded EVERY TIME she said she had to go even if it was 5 times during a meal. This does happen and they move thru this phase fast. I promise it is worth it to take them every time they say they have to go whether they do or not. I did ONLY praise her when she actually did potty though.

I also purchased the foam soap and the special wipes to make that time special as well. Did not use rewards but I have heard others' say they did. Definitely ask daycare what they do and try to mimick it if they are using rewards like stickers ???

Hope something helped! Good luck! Relax and let DD have control! She will let you know when she is ready!

I'm not sure if this is a good or bad idea, but I thought I'd throw it out there. My friend keeps the potty chair in the living room so her daughter doesn't have to stop watching TV to go to the bathroom. Last time I babysat, after she independently decided she needed to go, she sat on the potty for like ten minutes before she finally peed. Maybe some kids just need to relax and not feel rushed in order to do their thing. If they are isolated from the action by being in the bathroom, or if someone is standing over them waiting, maybe they feel rushed and it's harder to perform.

Come to think of it, my mom used to put the potty near the doorway between the kitchen and dining room - basically in the middle of the action. So there was no time pressure, and this was successful. Just a thought.
