OT - When to move to toddler bed

I know that this has probably been discussed before but, the blankie thread just prompted me to wonder.

How old was your child when you transitioned to a toddler bed?

Joshua is 18 months old and I actually think that he would be a good candidate to transition to a toddler bed. However, he has NEVER slept well in a crib and has slept with me since coming home. He sleeps on a low cot at daycare and loves it. If you transitioned your child from co-sleep to toddler bed, can you please share your story or advice??

Thanks

We didn't transition Sophia at all. She is 19 months old and been sleeping in her toddler bed for 2 months now. She loves the room she has. It was actually my DH's toddler bed. So, it's pretty good size and I just put 2 bed rails on it and she loves it.
I accidentally broke the crib rail one day, so we really didn't have a choice! Good Luck!

We transitioned Brayden at about 18 months and he did very well. He fell out a few nights in a row, but now has no problems.

I put all my kids in the toddler bed around a year old. Mainly because I was pregnant and needed the crib for the next baby, lol. That happened with my last 3 children, one had to move up so the other one could come, lol.

We transitioned JD to his TB when he was about 18 months old. We struggled with this for a while not knowing when to do it and if we just needed to buy another crib or what. We started having him take naps in his TB but sleeping at night in the crib. Then, one night decided to put him in the TB. He did just ok...it was a little too much freedom for him and he didnt know what to do with it. After about a month, he was only waking up once per night (that's normal, however). I do think he likes it much more than his crib. He just turned 2 and he does like climbing into his bed and not being confined to a crib. He sleeps on a cot at school too, which I think helped a lot.

I'm the opposite... I plan on keeping my daughter (two next week 2) in her crib until it's a safty hazard (climbing out, etc.). I got her toddler bedding and all, but those rails are still up

My friend gave us a cool fire engine bed for AJ to use. It is very low to the ground, has rails and uses a crib mattress. It is a nice transition bed till he can go into his twin bed. We need the crib for Emily. AJ is 15 months old and we he will be in his new bed and big boy room this weekend !!!
Pray it works out for us all !!

Connor was just over 2 when we got his first toddler bed. It had the rails and crib mattress; sat very low to the ground. He did great! Then a few months ago we bought a firetruck bed. It's a bit bulkier, but still sits low to the ground. The sides come up like big sides on the firetruck, still fits the crib mattress so a nice size. He loves it, too.

Our toddler bed is the stuffed animal bed, lol

We are just using it for storage. I never planned to use a toddler bed, but my mom got us a used one (and a mattress) she found a great deal on. Zoe isn't climbing out of her crib or anything, so we will probably move her straight to a twin when she does start climbing out (not planning on any siblings any time soon).

Phew, you are all very encouraging. When I brought this topic up at work, the other moms made me feel like it was way too early. However, I am pretty sure that he will do fine with a bed of his own. I actually think that he will enjoy it. I don't think the bed is going to be the issue, it will be the fact that mommy isn't next to him.

I think that I am going to give it a try really soon. I will let you all know how it goes.

John does not like sleeping in his crib anymore so he ends up in my bed. I was thinking about trying a bed but wasn't sure he was old enough too. Does everyone get a toddler bed or a regular twin bed? I have a twin bed but that might be too high for him.

Kathy,

You could try a twin mattress on the floor.

Thanks for bringing this up. Liana is going to be over a year old when she comes home, and I am going back and forth about whether to buy a crib at all.

We co-slept during my visit trip, and even though the reports say that she sleeps in a crib at her foster mom's, I really think that she co-sleeps there. The crib at the Marriot seemed very unfamiliar and scary to her.

I figure I could co-sleep at night for a couple of months, have her nap in the toddler bed, and then start transitioning to nights in the toddler bed.

Is this a crazy idea? It just seems like it is so much stress to get her used to a new home and a crib at the same time, and then 6-10 months later to make her get used to a toddler bed.

I'm with Daphne. Matthew will be 2 next week and I have no intention of moving him out of his crib anytime soon. Of course, the fact that he sleeps very well in his crib and has never tried to get out has a lot to do with it!!!!

I think the co-sleeping for a few months, napping in the toddler bed, then going to a toddler bed is a great idea.

Hector came home at 22 months, and I had planned on co-sleeping, but he was not a co-sleeper. We ran out and got him a bed in the dead of winter. He loves his toddler bed. I think the fm had him in a crib before.
