Attorney question..

Did anyone's Guatemalan attorney require them to send pictures of their child with an update every six months after coming home?

I'm sure there is no legality to it, but I was just wondering if it is common. I cannot believe that with the care our attorney gave our case, he is asking us to send him updates so he knows that Sofie is doing well.. He didn't care how she was doing while in Guatemala ~ didn't buy her vitamins when the Dr perscribed them and more that I won't get into..

I just find it odd that he would request 6 month updates..

The updates were part of our agency contract. Our agency explained that it is to let the people who have blessed your adoption in Guatemala know that they made the right decision. It helps the future adoptive families because they see the children in the US and thriving.

I've heard of some attys who keep files on the children in case the mothers come and want to see pictures/hear updates on their children. If this is the case, he should explain that. If it is just b/c HE wants an update, that's crazy. I know we had to submit 2 post placements within 6 months....for our agency, and I know they forwarded them to Guatemala...including pictures. But now we are done.

Marcy,
Our agency requires that for the first year that the child is home that an update on their form with pictures is required every 3 months. Then, after the first year for the next 3 years, an update on their form with pictures is required every 4 months. It is a pain and I am usually late with mine, but I do get them down there.

How much of this is agencies wanting to look good?

Just wondering as I start going through our "you need postplacement reports" stuff.

We went through so much just to bring her home that I'm dreading more hoops.

Is it ok to feel bitter like this? I love my dd and she is finally home after a LOT

of incompetence. If there is no mandated Guatemalan law about any post-placement

information why are we being asked to jump hoops?

I'm with you mariais5...

UGH UGH UGH.

I had the same attorney as you and he didn't require that but our agency did. I am with you that he didn't seem too concerned about our case either. Congrats on getting your sweet girl home!!

I wouldn't even mind if this was an agency requirement, but the request came directly from the attorney.. He did such a poor job with our adoption and others that our agency isn't using him anymore.

My biggest concern is that he wants to use Sofie's image to promote an orphanage he says he is opening.. Our FM and agency have great doubts that an orphanage will be opened.

I just wondered how common it was for an attorney to personally request this..

Jennifer ~ We came home Tuesday!! We're thrilled to be home, but we're leaving again tomorrow for vacation! ;-))

I agree with you and if our facillitator would have requested this I would have laughed in his face, of course AFTER the embassy appointment. Are YOU suppose to pay for the pics to be sent down? I wouldn't do it because what can HE do? He probably asked you to do it because Sopie is so darn cute and he wants to use her pics to advertise!!!

Of course with our agency we do have to do post placements and I will send pics down to our facillitator in case her birth mother ever comes to see them, but that is my choice and I doubt my facillitator will even give them to her.

our agency requested this also but, due to THEIR incpoetance, I send them directly to the attorney via email. They pass them along to the girls' foster family as well as keep a file for the birth mom if she ever wanted to come see. Our attorney and all in his office were great and cared for the girls greatly so I will continue to send them down for as long as I remember!!!
Maura.

Really, what is an agency going to do to you if you don't do the updates? If it's an agency requirement, and you already have the child, I'm not sure they can do anything to you if you don't comply. Maybe I'm wrong, but just don't really understand what the big deal is?

We had no such requirement but do send pictures periodically to the FM and the attorney should the birth mom want to see.
