DH would like to try to learn Spanish (I tried in college and well, . . . put it this way, the professor said he never saw anyone look so pained and confused as I did. I swear he passed me out of pity). Can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced CD(s) that would help him learn basic Spanish? He would like it on a CD so he can listen to it on his commute.

I recommend Pimsleur. You learn conversational Spanish through listening. I travelled to Nicaragua after using Pimsleur levels 1-3 and was able to converse elementarily. They are CDs and are great to use in the car while commuting to and from work.

things about Rosetta Stone (friend using their Chinese lessons)- Maybe you can check your library and see if they have copies to borrow and try out. They may be a bit pricey, but still way less expensive than a class at most community colleges (at least here).
Just listening to the language has helped me immensly- Maybe try finding a book you already know and listen to it in Spanish also (I love watching my favorite movies on DVD with the Spanish subtitles, or language option on!)

I down loaded a spanish lesson from i-tunes, it was about $6-8 and it was pretty good, the first lesson had a lot of basic stuff for traveling. I would go to websites that sell the programs and read the reviews before I decided what to finally buy, that might help you.

I recently bought Learning Spanish Like Crazy. It is a series of CDs for the car. I am a visual learner, so I was skeptical, but it was highly recemmended over Rosetta Stone on Amazon. It has been great and all done on repeating phrases through listening.

What I'm going to recommend has both CDs (4) and easy-to-carry small books (4) with Spanish on 1 side of the page & English on the flip-side, but I think you'll like it. My DH has, over the years, studied from books and still had difficulty with tenses and having even simple conversations with my Spanish-speaking mother. 2 months ago, he started using "Speak in a Week! The Complete 4 week set" (by Penton Overseas, Inc.) and he can finally speak to my mother clearly, his accent has improved tremendously, & he's able to understand conversation & the written word so much better. It cost $25 at Costco & I wish I had bought the Italian set &/or the French set for myself b/c it's gone now. The price on the box says it goes for $49.95 but perhaps some online book service has it for less.

Since doing this book and feeling excited about understanding so much more, he's started immersing himself in Spanish by listening to Spanish radio (he doesn't understand a lot of what the DJs say but he gets some of it), reading Spanish-language newspapers, etc. Good luck with whatever he buys.

I have heard if you have a library membership- you can actually take classes online for free! I have to ask my friend for more details- but she recommended we do that.
