When did your baby drop the morning nap?
And how do you know when to stop putting them down for it?
Our daughter has been napping both in the morning and the afternoon, for about an hour each, give or take. Lately she's had an odd pattern though. Last week on two separate days, she was up in her crib for her morning nap and just never went down. On two days we had events, so she didn't get her regular nap but fell asleep after both events on the way home (indicating that she would have taken a nap had she had the opportunity). One day she took both the regular morning and afternoon naps as usual. Then yesterday she took an hour and a half morning nap, but then never fell asleep in the afternoon while in her crib. My husband says I should just keep her on the regular pattern (put her in the crib at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. just like we have been) until we see a few days in a row of not falling asleep, and then drop the a.m. one. What is your experience? Does this sound right? She is 11 months old. Thank you for any input!!! -Meredith

Our ds is almost 11 months old and he takes the same naps! He just went down for his morning. He usually goes to bed about 9:30 or 10 in the morning and sleeps 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Then in the afternoon about 3 for about an hour. Then he goes to bed between 7:30 and 8.

of course all babies are different....but around 1 year of age is not abnormal. eli was done about 11 months with the morning nap....i was soooo sad....at 17 months he is napping about 1 hour in the afternoon....this week i cheated and put a dark sheet over his window, and i squeezed out an hour and a half. but at night he is sleeping 13 hours...so what can you do?
ethan napped like a pro....but he was also about 12 months when he went to just one 2-3 hour nap, with 12 hours at night. at 4, i can get him to nap just a few days a week for 30-60 minutes...but i'll take it! |

I have a 1 year old and he dropped his morning nap around 6 months. I do not think 6 months is normal. Right around 1 is through. He naps after lunch for three hours.

Flora gave up her morning nap at 13 months - which was great, because she started daycare at 14 months and the Frog Room takes only an afternoon nap.
Their afternoon nap starts at 1215p and goes for almost 3 hours. She goes to bed between 8-830p.

Right now, Sam naps from 10:15-12 and from 2:30-3:30 or 4. He goes to bed around 8 and sleeps until at least 7:30.
The past few weeks there has been a lot more "talking" during naptime, so I wondered if he was ready. I took him to the Dr. with me yesterday afternoon (so he didn't get his afternoon nap) and it was abundantly clear that he is NOT ready to lose his second nap! He is ONE YEAR OLD TODAY!!

Oh, we are REALLY interested in this topic, so I hope more people can give advice. We really thought a week or two ago that Anabel (13 months) was giving up her morning nap, but what seems to have happened is that her morning nap has gotten later and her afternoon nap is getting slightly earlier! Maybe they are converging? How do you really know when they are giving up one nap or the other? She's still going down to sleep in both the morning and the afternoon, just not as easily as she used to.
We are so torn - we want her morning nap to go away because in the fall she'll probably be in day care and will only have 1 nap, but on the other hand I don't know HOW she'll get through the day on just one nap, especially since she gets up at 5:30am!

My just 17 month old still takes 1/2 hr nap in the am and about 1 hr in the afternoon. Sometimes, she pushes through the morning nap, but that is just recently.

All three of my kids gave up their morning naps at right around 1 year old. It's hard at first sometimes to get them through the morning - sometimes it helps to take them to the store or be outside during that time. I think when they start not sleeping much for their second nap, you can cut out the morning one and then make the afternoon one a bit earlier. Hope that helps!

DS gave up his morning nap at around 10 months (oh how I wished for that 60-90 minute block) and at 14 months has an afternoon nap of between 90-120 minutes. He goes to sleep around 730-745pm and wakes up around 525 (yes, he somehow has an internal clock - even on days when we have events and he doesn't get to bed (crib) until 815/830pm.
He is in daycare but is transitioning to the toddler room this week - and they only have a pm nap - Barbara |

Our 18 month old still takes a morning nap for about 1 hour, and an afternoon nap for 2 hours or so. He's in bed by 7pm and up at 5am

Man, did I need this thread a few weeks ago!!
Our son just finally gave up one nap, but of course, he had to give up his afternoon nap!!! He really still wants that morning nap, but he would fight and fight going to sleep in the afternoon (played and talked and threw everything out of his crib and never did go to sleep!), so much so that I was starting to feel like I was spending the entire afternoon trying to get him to go to sleep. So, he is just taking his morning nap now, and I am slowly pushing it back. He goes down at about 11 now for 1 1/2-2 hours, and I am hoping to get him all the way to the afternoon within the next few weeks. He made it VERY obvious that he was ready!! And, Jillian, we are totally in your boat with a very early riser! I thought he would never make it thorugh the day with one nap too...his old wake time was around 5 or 5:30 AM. The bonus is that now he is actually sleeping better at night...he isn't waking until about 6 or 6:30 now and goes down at 7:30! ![]()

DD is 17 months and is just starting to lose the afternoon nap. She still ALWAYS takes the morning one around 11am (and she gets up at 9am). I am trying to push that nap later since there is only a couple of hours between when she gets up and when she naps. But the other day she fell asleep on the floor at 11:30am.
BTW - DD used to go to bed at 9pm, but since she is losing the second nap, the days she doesn't take it she is in bed at 7:30 - 8.

Wow. This was so interesting to see everyone's responses. Of course, as usual, every child is different, so there was variety. But it was also helpful actually to read about bedtimes. That was another one I wondered about. Our daughter is going down around 7 p.m. and waking up at around 6:30 a.m., which sounds pretty similar to many of you. So that's good to know. It sounds like even with the variety that the average age for moving to one nap is around one year of age. So, it may be happening. Then again, it may not, seeing as how of course right after I posted this original question, she started taking both naps again! Eeks. Who knows, but this is what keeps life interesting, right?
Anyway, thank you all so much for your input. It really helps to "talk" online to other parents and learn what their kids are doing.
