I don't have personal experience however, I have heard people say they have adopted directly through the hogar that my daughter is in. I've also heard of people doing a 2nd adoption directly through the lawyer that handled their 1st adoption.

We used an agency for our daughters adoption and they really did nothing for us. We were contact with our attorney through out our daughters adoption process and he always e-mailed us with updates. The agency did a horrible job of updating us on our case and really they only helped us with getting us a social worker to do our homestudy and matching us with our attorney. For our son's adoption we just used the attorney who did our daughters adoption. We had no problem with doing all the paperwork for our son's adoption on our own. We have friends using just our attorney and we have helped them with all of their paperwork since they have never adopted from Guatemala. I would only recommend adopting through just an attorney, if you know the attorney very well and trust them. Our friends are using our attorney because we highly recommend our attorney and know he is trustworthy.
