OT: Help Please....Has Your Baby Ever Done This?

Hello all,

My daughter (who is 13 months) has tried to gag herself several times. Every once in awhile, she will stick her finger down her throat. I always try to hold her hands when I see her do this, but a couple of times she has made herself spit up. At first I thought maybe it was because she was trying to get something out of her mouth that she was eating, but she has also done this when she's not eating anything.

Has anyone's baby ever done this before? Any ideas why she might be doing this?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Janel

I have no advice for you, unfortunately, but I can tell you that my friend's little boy (just turned 2) also adopted from Guat, did the same thing for a little while. She's not sure why either. Maybe they find that gag reflex accidentally and then like the fact that it's something new they can do.
I bet someone on here knows...they're all so smart!

i have seen kids do this. I think it is just a neat new trick... a GROSS new trick.
You can go 2ways with it...
1. say something like, "ugh,, yucko yucko...don't do that"
2. Ignore it and hope it will pass.

no worries,
tricia

My little boy does this too. I think it is something that happened by chance and then it's a look what I can do thing. He is two and still does it every once in a while. We just ignored it. It was hard not to stop him but I didn't want to give him any attention good or bad.

Aaron did it as a toddler and Luke did it for about 4 months. IT DROVE ME NUTS!!! He actually only gagged himself enough to puke 2 times but I think it was just a different feeling. Why he enjoyed that I do not know!

My 12 month old just started to do this also, I think she is trying to teeth on her finger and it goes down to far, she hasn`t made herself spit up yet, but the noise she makes sounds gross, lol. I notice her putting her finger in her mouth to teeth then she sometimes makes the gagging sound. Tammy

My son did it also. The first time he did it we were in the car and I was totally freaked out! I asked his pediatrician about it and he said it's just a phase and sure enough a few months later he stopped.

Good luck and hang in there!

Yep...

almost all little ones figure out their gag reflex at one time or another. It just depends on how long they think choking is fun before they stop!! Ali

My daughter did the same thing around 14 months. At first it scared me silly- because she was vomiting and then I realized she was doing it on purpose because of my reaction! Once I "tried" to ignore her sticking her fingers down her throat it stopped

I do think that she was teething and that is what started it, hopefully it will end soon!

My 13 month old daughter does this all of the time. It sounds like she is puking her guts out. It is gross!
But, after reading all of these posts, it sounds like it is just one of those things. No worries!

My bio daughter went through a phase of doing this, I don't remember at what age. I found the bigger deal I made of it the more she did it. As hard as it was, I just had to ignore her and she eventually stopped.
