HELP - Fear of larger bathtub

OK - this is becoming a source of real friction between my husband and I...CJ is terrified of the larger bath tub.
It is to the point where he just screams if there's even a hint that he may have to go near it.
He doesn't mind his toddler tub - but he's getting way too big for it.
Tonight I showed him where the water comes out of the faucet and how his little toys float just the same in the big tub, too. But the second he touches his feet to the bottom of the tub - it's a huge meltdown with screaming and everything.
I need help to determine how to desensitize him to his fears and how best to get him from the toddler tub to the big tub.
My husband feels that I am torturing him with even mentioning the large tub - I say that sometimes you have to just keep trying and hope that some day something changes.

I got in there with him one time - it was awful and the screaming never stopped. I'm wondering if I need to just take a bath with him watching outside of the tub as another idea.
It just isn't something that's going to go away.

Can you but the toddler tub in the regular tub as a transition? Not sure how old he is, but how about a shower? My daughter LOVES showers. We have a removable shower sprayer, so I just let it hang so for her it is spraying on her legs

Good luck! This too shall pass!

The toddler tub has always been inside of the larger tub. Every bath he has ever had has been in the toddler tub which sits in the larger tub.
Tonight I filled the larger tub with water around the toddler tub - this sort of helped because I showed him how his toys floated around his toddler tub.
My husband is furious with me for even trying this.

John has been the same way. He loved his ducky tub but hates the big tub. The last month has been better. I let him put all his toys in the tub himself and there is a ton just to distract him. But what really seemed to work with him is cups. John will fill them and dump them the entire bath.

I also tried getting in with him once and it didn't help either. My friend also suggested the shower which worked with her daughter but never tried it with John.

Good luck!!

Oh dear! So much for that idea. I do think you are doing the right thing by trying different ideas though!

How about covering the bottom of the tub with a towel, or some cute anti-slip stick-on's that come in different shapes? (Ducks, frogs, etc.) With just a tiny bit of water? Is it possibly the feel of the bottom of the tub?

Is he too big for one of the bath seats?

It took almost a week before Erick got used to the tub in Guatemala. I held him in the tub and he cried each time....until the end of the week. Then he was giggling an having a good time. I don't think he suffered any emotional damage. (But yes we did feel bad because you would think he had been traumatized at the time).

I have my DDs FP Toddler tub inside the big tub. She is very tall and almost 15 months old. I plan on keeping her in it until she is too big to fit anymore. I feel safer with her in it.

I like your idea of filling up the water around the tub. I'm going to try it when "it's time".

Good Luck!

Have you tried letting him play in the tub with no water present? Sitting on a blanket, or something.

I agree with you that conditioning is the key. I think that's just how toddlers work!
