I know I have read about this before, but can't remember where. Some of you have a SS# for your children, did you have to get thier COC first? I live in Pennsylvania, I completed the readoption and have his BC and name change paperwork but having hard time with SS#. I don't want to have to wait a whole year for his SS#, What do I do for income taxes with no #?SO many questions, so confusing!!! Make it stop!!! Maybe a coffe break is needed. (i just like this smilie)

It should not matter what state you live in because SS is a federal program. All I took was our son's Guatemalan BC with the translation and his Guatemalan passport. All she asked for was his passport and we had his SS card within two weeks.

Ditto Guatmom...I googled "social security administation" (I believe) and found some info on what to bring...I brought his BC, protocolo and his passport. All we needed was his passport. Easy and we got our SS card a week later.
She did say to come back once we had the COC to change him from permanent resident (I think) to citizen.

You definetly don't need the COC to get a SS#. I got numbers for both my kids within days of them coming home.
This thread has a great post by Sak9645 about getting a Social Security number for your adopted child, as well as all the silly reason the social security office may tell you about why you can't. Social Security Number As Jules said, you will have to go back eventually and show them the COC to have his status updated to citizen. Good luck!

Like Guatmom, we had our son's ss# in two weeks. We will have to go back and change his name once his recognition and name change is complete at the end of March. The Social Security office said they only needed the court documents with the name change. It didn't sound bad at all.

Thank you all. This is interesting info cause in 2004 when we brought our DD home our local SS office kept sending us away cause she didn't have her COC. I am going to call the 800 # now to find more out. It took us a year and half to get her SS#.

Definetly read the post by Sak9645 in the thread I linked above. Way to many SS offices don't know what they are talking about. You definetly do not need a COC to get a SS #.

You do not need a COC or a final readoption.
If you use the "permanent resident card", a lot of the information is already in their computer system for some reason. My local social security office got quite excited when I finally convinced them to enter the number. Of course this was after 45 minutes of excuses. Also, you will need to use the Guatemalan double surname that is used on all the official documents. |

Here's the info we received from our agency...hope it helps.
File for a Social Security Card for your child. This is done by taking the translated and original birth certificate down to your local social security office and filling out a fairly simple application form. Unfortunately, there are a few offices where the staff is unaware of how to do this and they may tell you that you must get a passport or citizenhip for you child first. This is not correct! Please advise the person helping you that you need resident alien status for your child and that as soon as you receive the proof of citizenship or passport later on, you will present it and they can change the status in their system. If they still refuse, ask to speak with a supervisor. If they refuse to get a supervisor or the supervisor says no, ask for a formal written denial because they are wrong! This happens only about 1-2% of the time, hopefully it will hot happen to you. |

I actually just did this... Chase was home in August I got his SS card in September..... I filled it out as a legal permanent alien and they looked at the protocolo, bc w/ translations and passport..... then got the CoC about a week later and I never week back until Thursday.... Chase's readoption was complete so I figured I'd change his name and citizenship all in one shot sinice it was going to take me a few hours at the local ss office.... I had no problem NJ readoption papers and CoC in his "old" name
