How long do they keep original documents??

My daughter has been home for 3 years. We have done the SS# and Illinois RE-adoption, but I have YET to do the COC and request the original paperwork back (G884?). How long will they keep her original paperwork and do you think it is already purged?? I want the original photo of her birthmom as she perished in that horrific mudslide.
Thanks for any info!

They are not purged. They are sent to the National Records Center in Lee's Summit, NJ. (Can you imagine the file cabinets?!) My daughter's packet came back quickly (6 weeks) from Lee's Summit, but she had only been home about 18 months. I don't know if it would be longer if they had to dig back further.

How sad about your daughter's birthmother. I hope you can get the DNA photo for her. And maybe other photos as well!

Thanks for the info....

I'm thinking from what I hear that getting the COC could take up to a YEAR!!!!! Which means that I have to wait a year before I do the G884 (?) anyway right???

I don't know why I have waited this long. I guess once she came home .. that's all that mattered!!

The wait for the COC seems to really vary by office. Some do take a long time, but not all.

You don't necessarily have to wait until you have the COC to file the G884. You can just include all the paperwork they need and not have them pull it from the file.
