Need Help-Son still Snoring and having Breathing issues

Okay so I'm wondering if anyone could give me some input. My son had is adnoids out and tubes put in December. Main reason for the Dr. was that he had never ending BAD ear infections. Something that worried us was that he was a BAD snorer and also seemed like he would wake up about every minute (not kidding) and gasp for air, rummage around, go back to sleep,do this over and over again. Anyway, he had the surgery and seemed to be better. No more ear infections and the sleep issues seemed to be gone also. Well for the last month he has been snoring something fierce!!! Waking himself up, one only knows how his brother who shares a room sleeps through it. I mean it's really LOUD. So my question to you is...What now?? Is it ever just normal for kids to snore like that? Or do I immediatly get him in to Mr. ENT Dr. again?? Plus you can tell he just does not get any good sleep as he's tired and cranky all day...poor little man.
Any thoughts, ideas, recommendations would be so appreciated!!

Thanks!!

sleep apnea or asthma comes to mind. our daughter did this weird gasping & breathing would stop for a second and she would flail about. I had never seen anything like it. It took me a while to get a Dr. to tell me what was going on (we saw several) finally they said it was asthma. With the right meds the asthma is under control and she sleeps well now.

as for the sleep apnea a cpap machine can fix that problem.

hope this helps

I would see a pediatric pulmonologist and try to get a sleep study to see if he does have sleep apnea. The adenoids can grow back or his tonsils may be enlarged causing the sleep apnea.
Good luck.

Agree with BEBE. Call your son's ENT-do not wait. You should have this evaluated so appropriate treatment can begin ASAP.

did they not take the tonsils at the same time? that's my first thought. also, you need a sleep study. if that reveals sleep apnea, you need an mri to rule out unobstructed sleep apnea...but the fact that he is snoring makes me think it is obstructed and needs his tonsils out. if they are out already....i have NO idea. ethan, 3.5 had 2 sleep studies, he had sleep apnea, snored like a maniac, mri showed it had to be obstructed, wouldn't you know that it turned out his t's were 4 times too large for his little body, had a t&a and i have not heard a peep since. he sleeps so well with no sound at all. he does not gasp for air or stop breathing either. good luck...i KNOW how scary it is to watch this

I agree with Linda I am a Nursing Student who is getting ready to graduate and we just so happen to be working on this right now. The snoring could be as simple as Him having an enlarged tongue all the way to obstruction. So you ahave a piece of mind and are not worried all night long about his breathing( trust me I am psycho mom when it comes to this kind of stuff) I would get him to your peditrician and the pulmononlogist ASAP.

No had did not have his tonsils out with the surgery. The ENT Dr. thought they looked fine and didn't want to remove them at the time??

Thanks for the input guys, guess we'll be heading back to the Doc yet again.

I had two boys with sleep apnea and they were helped by the tonsil and adenoid removal. I am sorry your son is still strugling and I want to encourage you to see the ent again. Tonsils and adenoids can grow back but I would think it too soon if he just had them out. The sleep apnea can lead to some heart issues. I know no one is probably getting rest at your house. I hope you can get to the bottom of this and your little one will be better soon. Anna

Hi Amy -

We are going through this right now, except my DS is still in Guat. My last visit I noticed he is so much worse. I know he needs surgery but I wasn't informed officially of his problem. This time the facilitator called the ped. while I was there and he said he has an issue with his septum and surgery can wait. My agency feels this may not be able to wait since this is taking us a very long time. We may be looking at surgery there and we will have to pay. FM says she sleeps with him so she can wake him when his breathing pauses. At this point I am not sure how to proceed. Good luck!

you can try a simple thing of taking the baby off of dairy! this is all milk, cheese, yogurt, or dairy formula. just have to make sure the baby is getting an adequate amount of calcium from a supplement. i have seen this work many times. it's worth a try, certainly.

I'm sorry Samantha, I'm confused by your post, how is taking him off dairy helping?? Is the thought that he is allergic? He's 4 so I would think a dairy allergy would have come up before now, wouldn't you?

jemmawag- Oh, how hard that must be for you!! It kills me to go to sleep when he's right in the next room for fear he might stop breathing or something. I will say some prayers that your little one is okay.

My son snored like a lumberjack from just about the time we brought him home from the hospital. He never had strep or other ENT issues- so it took awhile for the doc to decide his tonsils needed to come out. They took his adenoids too. That solved the problem- he's a silent sleeper now. Maybe his tonsils enlarged after the adenoids were out to compensate for them being missing- they do both perform similar nonessential "filtering" functions in the body. Have the ENT check him out- and/or a ped. pulmonolgist to see why the problem is recurring after the supposed solution. Poor sleep affects kids in so many ways. My little man is 110% better now that he can breathe, and thus sleep, like a "normal" kid. Good luck!

Our little boy 2and half yrs old.
He came home at 5 months old and snored really loud soon after he came home.
We took him to the dr a few times he only had one ear infection right after he came home.
when he was about 15 months old we brought him to a ENT b/c the snoring and the waking up during the night was getting worse .
He was very restless during the day.
They said his tonsils were very enlarged and his adenoids were slighly swoolen.
They told us to watch his breathing to watch for pausing.
So we did and this JAN 24th they removed his tossils and adenoids .
But he is still snoring and still waking up during the night .
So he has an appt .to set up a sleep study on the the 27th of this month .
So i know what you are going through.
My PRAYERS WILL BE WITH YOU DAILY .
I would certainly see the ENT dr. again and go from there .
My DH says when he(meaning our little boy) has sleep abnia we all do.
GOD BLESS
