Question Did you use computer program or accountant for taxes?

For those of you who have already done your taxes, did you use one of the popular computer tax programs, or did you go to an accountant? I have heard of several people who used an accountant, and the accountant was not up on the adoption credits. But if you did use the computer program, does it allow all of the adoption credits like it should? We have several more weeks before we can get our taxes done anyway, because we are waiting on Social Security cards. Any help would be appreciated.

We have used both in the past, but this year we used an accountant because we wanted to make sure the adoption credit was done properly. The accountant we used was very knowledgable and knew about the adoption tax credit, so there was no worries there. I do believe that Turbo Tax makes it very easy to figure out too because we have friends who have done their own as well.

I did the adoption credit thing last year by hand-- no accountant and no computer program. It was very easy. Just go to the IRS website and download the appropriate form (8 something I believe). I asked my buddy who works for the IRS if I ought to bother with the tax program and he said that it probably wouldn't be of that much help so I guess it's the paper and pen again for me! Now, if I can get the schedule D done right. LOL.

I used TaxCut and then had my uncle who is a tax accountant check the tax credit and he came out with the exact same amount that TaxCut did.

We used Turbo tax last year and again this year. It carried forward our balance from 2005 correctly and used the correct portion of our new 2006 adoption. It was very easy.

Thanks to all of you who replied. That was very helpful information. I think my husband will be pleased with the information that you imparted. He was not looking forward to using an accountant this year, since he has done our taxes for many years now. Thanks again!

Turbotax

As we do every year- I did our taxes on turbotax and then our accountant checks them for a small fee. AS always- they were correct. We completed the adoption of our son last June- so all the deductions were claimed just now. I was worried that Turbotax would not have appropriate forms- but, they do It worked! Yippee! What a great return we will get!
Good Luck!

I have an accouting degree and do taxes every year. I usually will purchase the TaxCut program to do taxes from home instead of charging outrageous prices at the office for my friends and family. I feel that TaxCut ask/prompts all the right questions to assure that you get the most on your return. If you are not comfortable doing your return the long way with the paper return I recommend the TaxCut program. PM if you have any specific questions

Good Luck

I did ours with TaxCut last year -- it worked great -- handled the adoption credit just fine and seems to be doing the carryover credit from last year to this year just fine, too. Can't wait til we get our next little guy home and get to do this all over again!

You don't need a social for your child to receive the tax credit.

Turbo Tax and DST Change

I also used Turbo Tax for 2005 and 2006. For both years, the software was updated for current Federal Adoption Credit rules. Also, they ask about Adoption Credit Programs/Benefits received from your employer, as well. For us, this was important because we thought this money was taxable. Apparently, this is NOT the case! Yippee!!

FYI...as some of you may be aware the coming change in Daylight Savings Time may pose a problem to certain software that is not compliant. I have been informed by my employers that Turbo Tax WILL be affected.

Therefore, if you plan to file your taxes using Turbo Tax, be sure to do it before DST!!

Take care,
Kris
