Tubes

Hello everyone...those of you with experience...what is the recovery like after your child had tubes put in his/her ears?

Brayden is scheduled to have tubes put in his ears on March 6th. I know we should see a remarkable difference in health issues such as ear infections. I am just curious about the recovery from the actual procedure.

Thanks in advance.

NO recovery from the actual procedure. there is a risk of infection, so they will typically give you some antibiotic drops to use IF IF IF you see some puss....but it doesn't happen often. Ethan is on his second set....and he had no problems either time. Be sure to follow the directions...I think they don't want you to bathe them for 2 days....but after that, be sure to use ear plugs in the bath/pool, etc....but that is it. EASY!

When I had tubes put in my ears 23 years ago at age 5, I was up and running around the next day, but still alittle sore. I vividly remeber the whole thing since my brother had his tonsils out at the same time. It was all the ice cream you could eat. I got to go home and he stayed over night. I was better enough to go and pick him up the next day. I hope this helps.

Mia had tubes put in 4 months after coming home, she was very cranky in the hospital but on the way home she was singing and babbling. We were suppose to keep her calm at home the rest of the day but that was an impossible task. So in other words, kids bounce back really quickly.

Our son Wes has had them twice: at age 10 months, and at age 10. Both times he seemed to have no effects from the procedure, just crankiness from the anesthesia. He did throw up the second time with the anesthesia, but I got a prescription (a suppository) which stopped it right away. Other than that, he was fine.

BTW, we got some ear plugs made at the ENT's office which stayed in a little better than the commercial ones. They were around $30.00, I think.

You've had a lot of surgery lately. Hope you get to an easier place soon!

There really is not too much recovery time. My son was the first surgery that day and we were home by 10:00 am. He was a little out of it from the anesthesia. We gave him some tylenol later that day.

This made a world of difference in my sons life.

BTW - the procedure itself was so quick, I didnt even have time to get a cup of coffee.

DD (now 7 & 1/2) had tubes placed when she was 9 months old-due to persistant fluid for over six months, not ear infections. (I know there is some discussion now in the medical community about whether or not this makes a difference in speech/learning delays-but that is another thread ) DH and I were a mess with worry about this. The procedure was very quick and dd didn't have any complications. But the thing I will remember most was walking out of Children's Hospital with dd in my arms. Catie heard the birds singing for the first time. She looked around and looked up at me with those big, lavendar eyes and gave me the most beautiful, happy smile. I will never forget it as long as I live.

Peace,
Jill

M just got his first set at the beginning of January. No real recovery from the procedure, just from the anestesia. He slept hard all morning and then still took an afternoon nap. By evening though he was up and about. His balance was better and it was fun watching him react to all the new sounds he heard.

Also, he's already had a cold since getting the tubes and for the first time, NO EAR INFECTION! What a blessing.

Now, if he'd just finish cutting those teeth.

Gabriella had tubes inserted in January and her recovery was very quick. When she first awoke in the recovery room, she was a little fussy but I think that was mainly due to her realizing we were not there. She calmed down once we got to her and she was able to leave about 20-30 minutes after the surgery. She slept all the way home (about 2 hours), but once we got into the house, she was ready to eat and play. You would have never thought she'd had surgery. Its was amazing!! Since then, she has been ear infection free despite colds and teething (which used to always lead to ear infections). Good luck!!

My 23 month old FD just had tubes put in 3 weeks ago, no recovery, she was a little dizzy for about an hour, ate pancakes and played all day, finally did take a 4 hr nap. That was it.

BTW - our ENT said not to worry about getting water in her ears during bathtime or in a pool, but if swimming in a lake, then we would want to use something.
And like many of the above posters, she has had a cold and a runny nose, but NO ear infections!!!

Dominic just had tubes put in on Monday and he is happy as a clam! The procedure was quite short and he had a very hard time coming out of the anesthesia. He wanted lots of juice and this made him vomit the entire way home. He was done the procedure at 10 AM and he was back to himself by 1 PM. It went well
