For newborns, I prefer the hotsling (pouch) kind of sling. You can also use it with older children in a hip carry. I use this for quick in-and-out stops like when I need to just run into the post office. Just slip it on, sit kid in it and go. (Google hotsling.)

For long walks, etc, I prefer a Mei Tai carrier. It's not as rigid as a snuggli/bjorn and thus grows with them for longer. Also, no snaps, buckles or other "stuff." I like the ones from MeiTaiCarrier (google it as one word) as they seem to have the highest quality.

I also like ring slings.

I am probably uncoordinated but I could never get the sling to work well for me with an older baby. I don't know about the Bjorn...but I just ordered a Ergo which was highly recommended by a few attachment sites..because you can use it for infants up to like age 5! I'll let you know how it goes when it arrives. It wears on the front, the hip, or the back.

We used a Bjorn on our first visit and it worked fine. (Our baby never liked the sling.) But we've got an Ergo now, and it's GREAT! The child is upright like in a Bjorn, but it can be used front, back or hip and the weight is much better distributed so it's much more comfortable then a Bjorn (in my opinion) and can be used till the child is much larger. We also have a Mei Tai carrier, but we love the Ergo so much we haven't used it yet.

I've got a peanut sling & a Bjorn, and prefer the Bjorn for my 12lb baby. The peanut sling puts a lot of pressure on my shoulders, the Bjorn seems to distribute the weight better.

a properly fitted sling should not hurt.

i like the pouch type slings for little babies and hip carrying older babies/toddlers. i have a hotsling, peanut shell and a mammas milk pool pouch.
never a huge fan of the ring slings.
mei tais are great. i like freehand and babyhawk.

hubby preferred the snugli/bjorn type though. so i would leave it adjusted for him and he would use that while i would use the others.

ive heard lots of nice things about the ergo.

We had both a sling and a Bjorn on pick-up trip. Used the Bjorn for out and about....sling for fussy periods in the hotel, and for quick in and out while traveling. (Had umbrella stroller....would sling him when he needed to sleep or didn't want to be in the stroller.) Has now outgrown the Bjorn, but we still use the sling for soothing....like now, when he's been sick with vomiting and diarrhea since Christmas Eve. He's too wiped out to play as usual, but fusses if we try to put him back to bed....soothes instantly when we put him back in his sling.

BTW, got an Ergo for Christmas and have used once for an out and about. MUCH more comfortable than the Bjorn, and as mentioned many times, can be used til child is much larger.....

It's funny. I posted to this thread earlier and a few hours later my Ergo arrived!!!

I love the hip position and so does my son! He happily spent time in the carrier with his head cradled against my shoulder/chest and drank his bottle while I was able to have my hands free to make dinner. We also had easy eye contact. This will be getting a LOT of use!!!!

Holding time really helps with his attachment issues. If he gets his "time"...he skips the temper tantrums. Today even with the whole extended family here...he only had one tantrum...and that's when his cousin took his new truck!

MY VOTE IS THE SLING! COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT IT! LOVE IT! I am very short and Bjorn is longer than my torso. No I'm not a midget.
